Wrenthorpe 2-1 Thornes

Thornes U17 were narrowly defeated by local rivals Wrenthorpe in a tightly fought out contest and certainy deserved at least a point.

A close fought first half during which goalscoring chances were kept to a minimum by both sides saw the score remain at 0-0.

Wrenthorpe started much the livelier side in the second half and they were the first to score, a shot through a crowd of players from a corner found its way into the corner of the Thornes net.

Wrenthorpe seemed to take hold of the game, and increased the score to 2-0 when a through ball found the home winger looking suspiciously off side. His first shot was parried well by keeper Ben Burnett, but the winger drove home tbe rebound.

To their credit, Thornes fought back well. They were very unlucky not to get something from the ref when striker Alex Bailley-Lee burst through on the edge of the box only to find himself being pulled back by his shirt, apparently unseen by the ref. Seconds later James Parkinson broke through and struck the post with a fierce left foot drive and Luke McGrath fired a fierce shot which flashed across the face of goal.

Luke Townend finally made the breakthrough when his 40 yd stunner evaded the keeper and crashed into the back of the net.

Further chances were created by Thornes, most notably when Luke McGrath saw his shot flash across the face of the goal.

The game ended 2-1 to Wrenthorpe but it would not have been unfair had Thornes taken a point from the game.

Newstrack Newsagents Man of the match went to 'keeper Ben Burnett and midfielder Jack Whiitaker in a very entertaining match.
