Trojans win mid-week.

JIM BROWN HEAVY WOOLLEN CUP 1ST ROUND
WEDNESDAY 10TH MAY 2017
MIRFIELD STAGS 4 THORNHILL TROJANS 48
AT HILLRICH PARK
Thornhill Trojans proved to be too strong in the one sided Heavy Woollen Cup tie as they brushed aside a brave challenge from Mirfield Stags. The Trojans had the victory sewn up by half time when they lead 34-0. Had Thornhill been consistent with their goal kicking then the margin of victory would have been far greater.
Star of the show for the Trojans was man of the match James Craven whose attacking runs from full back proved problematic for the Stags throughout the game. There were also stand out performances from George Woodcock and hat-trick man Mindaugas Bendikas.
The Trojans scored straight from the kick off. Thornhill kicked the ball high and the setting sun probably caused the Mirfield player to fumble the ball as it came down. The ball went free for Bendikas to pick up and go striding over for a try. The try could have been registered sooner hadn’t Bendikas opted to take play infield nearer the posts. However, with just 10 seconds of play on the clock Bendikas scored what could possibly be the fastest ever try for Thornhill. George Woodcock converted.
Play restarted and another high kick into the sun caused a Mirfield player to lose possession. This time Lee Smith took the ball forward for the Trojans. With the line within reach James Craven went stepping clear to go over for a try which George Woodcock converted.
This set the pattern of play in the first half as the Trojans began to run in tries at regular intervals to keep their supporters entertained. A good up field move involving Scott Dyson and Anthony Broadhead ended when Mindaugas Bendikas sprinted clear for an unconverted try.
Scott Dyson was once again involved in an attacking move when he capitalised on a good run from Lee Smith. The move ended when Wayne Wilson plunged over the line to score an unconverted try against his former club.
Joss Ratcliffe then ran onto a kick to plant the ball down out wide for an unconverted try.
It was Scott Dyson who once again set up a Thornhill try when he sent out a wonderful pass which picked out George Woodcock. Woodcock surged over for a try which Craig Holmes converted.
Scott Dyson then turned try scorer when Thornhill played the ball at pace. James Craven made good ground and Dyson finished the move with an unconverted try. At 34-0 the Trojans were in control as the teams broke for the half time interval.
Play got underway for the second half and Thornhill were awarded a penalty. Thornhill played on and Joss Ratcliffe ran onto a pass from Craig Holmes to score an unconverted try out wide.
Thornhill once again fell into a try scoring rhythm and Mindaugas Bendikas completed his hat-trick of tries. Sam Ratcliffe converted.
With play just passed the hour mark the ball was flung along the attacking line and Anthony Broadhead went over for an unconverted try.
Whether it was a late flurry from Mirfield or just the Trojans easing off, it was the hosts who finished this game in impressive style. From a penalty situation the ball was flung at speed along the attacking line. The move ended with James Rhodes scoring an unconverted try out wide. Joel Shaw couldn’t add the extras.
Eventually both teams had had enough and referee Paul Spivey chose to blow up for full time nearly 10 minutes early. The win puts Thornhill through to the semi-finals and a step nearer retaining the trophy.
