An overview of the InterClub game

Following the Robbie 10's the competitive action kept up with the InterClub game. The match provides the opportunity for players involved to stake their claim for a shirt ahead of the upcoming season.

The teams were even split with a mixture of players both old and new to the club and those trying and testing new positions. The match was to be split into 3 x 20minute sessions.

TC Black played the first 20 minutes in total ascendancy. Some excellent ruck work provided a stable platform for the backs to operate. With Pete McCauley at 10 he was supported via a centre partnership of Chris Clapp (12) and Rob Meekins (13) with Ross Mellor-Clark (15), Clint Roscow (11) and Pete Ashton-Yamnikar (14) adding additional pace. This back line used their pace to full advantage with excellent interchanging of positions and pace allowing the ball to be moved quickly to the wide channels where opportunities were created and tries scored. Lets not however take anything away from the forward pack during this period however they provided excellent support and worked tirelessly to ensure that clean ball followed.

During the first interval Coach Mark Hanson, who was on the losing side at this point, made some equalising changes which summarily amounted to giving his team Rob Meekins.

Into the second twenty the match became a much more even affair. The one man advantage of TC Gold was beginning to pay dividends and they saw a lot more of the ball. With Dom Griffiths and Callum Holland beginning to make good yards in the loose this provided Tobias Bennedict Holder-Williams the quick ball to unleash his back line. With Dan Orwin using both Rob Meekins and Dave Snelson to good effect this provided space for the pace of Mark Burrows to exploit the spaces left and TC Gold ran out the half as 7-0 winners.

With injuries and tiredness starting to creep in the final third was a much more one sided affair with TC Gold in the ascendancy. With the hard work in the defensive line paying dividends TC Gold kept the lion share of possession over the final third and ran in some very well worked tries. The pick of the bunch, and likely the day, was Rob Meekins solo effort where he chipped over the onrushing defence and collected his kick before racing away under the posts for the final score of the day.

The game was played in excellent spirits with the competitive edge required and left the coaching staff with some serious questions ahead of the new season.
