Thornton played Burnley 3rds on Saturday with a win on an energy sapping pitch. With long grass and a steep angle across it definitely tested the Thornton players fitness.

The match started with Thornton kicking to Burnley. After winning it back they got off to a great start with a score from the short range try scoring machine Dougie Riley who also got two last week. The conversion was kicked from a tight angle by Danny Lindsley.

The forwards carried on from last week with another great performance in the scrum pushing Burnley back, Hooker Matt Williams stole plenty of ball from Burnleys put in. Mike Davenport was performing well in his new position at scrum half with a few darting runs and good passing to Fly Half Dave Harrison.

The next try came from a miss pass by Harrison who fed outside centre Dom Griffiths who then dodged a few tackles before passing to Lindsley on the wing. He outpaced the Burnley backline to score under the posts. He then kicked the conversion.

Burnley came back into the game with some good attacks down the wing and were starting to cause Thornton trouble. From one of these the winger was put clear and scored in the corner. They then converted the conversion.

Thornton kicked off and soon took back control of the game. After winning the Burnley scrum number 8 Sharif Ela popped the ball to Davenport. He then scampered past the the Burnley backline to score a great solo try. The conversion was then missed by Lindsley and Thornton ended the half 19 - 7 in the lead.

The second half began as the first started with strong play from the Thornton Forwards. The back row of Sharif Ela, Dave Redman and Captain Pete Ray were causing havoc at the rucks and the front 5 were also getting themselves involved protecting and stealing the ball and destroying the Burnley scrum.

A good attack from the Thornton backs was stopped 10 metres out and from the resulting ruck the Riley struck again and dived over the line. The conversion was scored by Lindsley.

Thorntons veteran Hooker Terry Ryan then came on for Burnley after their Hooker was injured to avoid the scrum becoming uncontested. The opposite happened as Burnley started competing better and kept more possesion.

Thornton were then forced back to their own line on a few occasions as Burnley improved and only kept them out with good tackling. A kick down field from Harrison to releive the pressure led to the next try. Two Burnley defenders collided trying to collect the ball and it fell perfectly for Danny Lindsley to pick up. He sprinted to the Burnley line only to be caught and tackled 2 metres short by the Burnley winger. Lindsley rolled the ball back as he was tackled and Inside Centre Rick Brown profited scoring an easy try from a distance Riley would be proud of. Danny Lindsley then converted.

Thornton winger Andy Dahl then came on for Burnley after an injury and they once again forced Thornton back to their own line. Thornton strong defence stole the ball back in the centres and then fast passing through the backline allowed winger Tom Bailey to sprint down the pitch. As the Burnley backs closed in Bailey kicked though for Sean who was now on at Outside Centre for his first game. He made it to the ball first, kicked again and beat the defence to the line to score a debut birthday try. Danny Lindsley once again kicked the conversion.

The match then finished with the score Burnley 3s 7 Thornton 2s 38.

A great result for Thornton against a hardworking Burnley team.

Man of the match was close range try expert Dougie Riley.
