Introducing new A&TRFC President Richard Owen.
This is the first of what I hope will be a monthly(ish) update of my view of the club and what is happening, it is aimed at keeping you up to date but is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all that is occurring.
The season is now upon us with two pre season games under the first teams belt already, with a third pre-season game this coming Saturday away to Felixstowe. This will be an important game allowing the team coach, James Cook, to gauge our strengths and weaknesses ahead of the season starting for real. I believe we should be in for a really exciting season with the teams we are playing being better matched, this should lead to some excellent opportunities to watch good, close games over the coming months.
The Vikings Youth team (U16) also has a full programme ahead of them. A collaborative effort with Southwold Rugby Club will see both U16 teams combined to play numerous games both at Aldeburgh and Southwold. This is an exciting development and will see the players compete under the guidance of Dale Hoffman as U16 coach. The youth are the future of the club and as much support as possible should be given to Dale and the team. Home games will be played on Sunday mornings.
This brings me on to the Mini and Midi (renamed as the Saxons and Romans) which is not such a positive story. At the time of writing we have still not got enough volunteers to run this without placing undue pressure on the few that are happy to do so. If anyone would like to volunteer please contact me by email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Never-the-less we are not giving up on this age group and are working hard to secure their place at Aldeburgh.
Back on a positive note, the clubhouse is coming along nicely. The social area has been stripped ready for refurbishment but more striking is the outside with a new roof and new windows/ doors fitted. The building will soon be re-rendered and will start to really look the part, well done to all those involved and congratulations on the progress you have made to date. It should be remembered that the clubhouse is work in progress and as such there are many hazards present inside the building so I would ask that access to the building is restricted. Alternative arrangements are being made for the storage of equipment outside of the club house during this period.
Finally, I would like to mention the fun day that was again organised by Karen Hoffman. This event is the biggest event that we organise to give something back to the community and was well supported by many. It was a golden opportunity for the club to demonstrate what it is about and to interact with the residents of Aldeburgh. The attendance was fantastic with the attractions drawing a large crowd and the first team playing Ipswich YM. All in all, a fantastic event, with thanks again to Karen and volunteers on the day.
I hope to see you at the club soon.
