Thorpe Willoughby come up short in a tight encounter to give them some idea of the step up in class they will face this year.
Thorpe had to shuffle their team due to the unavailability of Seaman because of business commitments. It also emerged mid-week that Garry Turner had broken his toe during his innings last week and was also unavailable.
Askham Bryan batted first and struggled to get runs whilst conserving wickets. Rob Chadwick, Wild and Watson bowled 18 overs between them for a total of 31 runs but could just claim the one wicket. In the later stages of the innings this enabled Askham Bryan to indulge in some big hitting, including 2 sixes – no mean feat on a wicket which showed the effects of the recent weather. From Thorpe Willoughby’s viewpoint the fielding highlight of the innings was Jake Wild’s direct throw to run out Strachan on 21. Askham Bryan ended up on 112-7 and the teams retired to the dressing rooms to try and warm up a little – if Thorpe Willoughby thought it was cold last week then the weather on Saturday soon put paid to that as a cold front descended on the ground as the game wore on.
After tea Thorpe started their reply with a steady opening stand of 30 between Nasir Shefta and Alan Pearse. Ross Powell
came and went and then a 29 run stand between father & son Shefta saw the score move onto to 65-3. Unfortunately Thorpe’s batters didn’t adapt to the conditions as well as they had last week and the next 4 wickets fell for 21 runs. With the heart of the batting falling cheaply it was left to the tail to provide some runs to get within striking distance of the winning total. Alas they were unable to finish the job and fell 10 runs short all out.
Top scorer for Thorpe was extras on 33 and the innings had 6 lbw decisions given – an indication of the quality of the bowling on display and the sportsmanship exhibited. Grewer starred for the hosts with 6 for 24 off 9 overs.
Thorpe were left to reflect on the step up in class required against a side who had a mid-table finish in the division last year and Askham Bryan were definitely pleased to come out on top of this encounter.
