3rd week of the season and the team are travelling to Gedling 2nds. It was a mixture of Honda Accords and Volkswagen GTI’s in convoy.

Others scrounged a lift and some went on bus. Petrol was £1.80p a gallon and Auf Wiedersehn was on the telly. Some went already dressed in whites with a change of shoe wear once they arrived. Got to say, they did look wallies dressed in all white wearing black and brown brogue shoes.

After winning the first game of the season the team were full of confidence going into the game. They were brought down to earth, batting first they scored a paltry 92 all out with captain Harry Pick top scoring on 27 not out.

Gedlings reply was slow and laborious but nevertheless they reached their target with the loss of 7 wickets to claim the points.

The only resistance to the Innings came from Andy Footitt who took 3 wickets for 26 runs. Now just the thought of this man is enough to give anyone a migraine.

A sergeant in the police force he was head of the square and lovingly caressed it, cut it, rolled it and loamed it. You even had to ask permission to tread on it.

He became a half-pedigree badger. Basically if you were born and bred in the village you had a full pedigree to play for the team. If you were married in the village you became half pedigree and then there were the rest of the team mainly locals from surrounding villages Barton and Gotham.

This is where the migraine comes in. He got to book his Church Wedding before me. There was no way there was going to be 2 weddings in the village on the same day so I had to settle for the church the following week.

That’s fine but doing a speech at the reception is fine that’s unless the Trickies are up the road playing at home. As it was Forest beat Crystal Palace at home 5-2 and Trevor Francis scored 3 and I missed it. I will never forgive him for it.

Back to the game, that made it Played 3 Won 1 Lost 1 Not Played 1. It got even worse because the away game the next week to Flintham was also rained off and the following week there was a free week so there was no game at all.

So after 5 weeks of the season the team had 1 win under their belts, not the most conspicuous of starts to the season.

Next week May 31 Thrumpton at home to Sutton Bonnington
