Colchester United 4 - 1 Thurrock
Colchester United progress in the Essex Senior Cup
A strong start from Thurrock as they took the game to Colchester United but as the game wore on the speed and strength of Colchester’s squad allowed them to secure their place in the next round.
A half chance for Colchester is blocked by James Goode before the first real chance for Thurrock as Joe Christou flicks a header over his marker to release Dennis Oli. Oli holds off his defender and forces Dan Wilks to save with his feet.
Thurrock’s defence are tested frequently by the pace and quick passing of Colchester but are able to prevent any real threats on Oshane Brown’s goal. The opening goal comes on the half hour, the ball is carried at pace down the right wing before being crossed in, James Goode is first to the ball but his attempted clearance fell inside the upright to give Colchester the lead. However, Thurrock have the ball in the net moments later after Reece Morgan wins the ball on the right wing and passes into Christou who again sets up Oli to head on and then follow up the rebound but the goal is denied by an offside flag.
Half Time: Colchester United 1 – 0 Thurrock
Reece Morgan and Joe Christou are replaced at half time by Joel Nouble and Charlie Stimson and Stimson is immediately in action picking the ball up on the left wing before setting Lewwis Spence to drive his shot into the side netting from twenty five yards. And then it is Nouble letting the ball run through his legs to set Spence on the opposite side of the box but this time Spence finds the keeper’s arms.
George Brown extends Colchester’s lead with a run from the halfway line dodging through tackles and culminating with a blast into the roof of the net. Thurrock pulled one back with a sublime movement. Four touches from net to net as Brown kicks the ball from his hands to Spence to Stimson to Nouble who twists to force his half volley past Wilks. But the two goal advantage is soon restored as Courtney Senior also makes a long mazy run before finishing well.
Whilst the spirit and desire are still there for Thurrock the fitness of Colchester’s youngsters starts to tell in the final fifteen minutes and Colchester get their fourth with a ball in from the left wing touched home from six yards by Eoin McKeown.
Thurrock still don’t give up and Nouble, Remi Sutton, Stimson and Jeremiah Kamanzi play the ball around to give Jamie Price a sight of goal which deflects wide for a corner. One last hurrah as Kamanzi rides a foul and with advantage played gets a shot away but over the bar.
