Leatherhead 0 - 2 Thurrock
Thurrock gain their first away points of the season
Thurrock arrived at Fetcham Grove still seeking their first away points for this season and with a goal in each half they achieved their aim.
The first half hour is quite cagey with Leatherhead having most of the possession and Thurrock soak up the pressure restricting Leatherhead to a couple of half chances with no real chances of their own but as the clock counts down to half time Thurrock start to take over.
The first glimpse comes as Michael Pindy flicks the ball round the corner to the overlapping Reece Morgan, he passes to Charlie Stimson, receives the ball back and drives a fierce cross across the face of goal but beyond everyone. Remi Sutton carries the ball out of defence until he is finally stopped at the edge of Leatherhead’s box leading to a counter resulting in a blast across Thurrock’s box that is put out for a corner.
Stimson is released down the middle of the pitch and gets into the area and sees his shot blocked for a corner. The corner is long to the far post for Jordan Clark to head back in before it is cleared.
With less than a minute remaining Remi Sutton is again high up the pitch and too strong for his marker easily holding him off to get to the bye line before dinking the ball into the six yard box, Dennis Oli gets across the centre half and keeper to head home.
Half Time: Leatherhead 0 Thurrock 1
Within moments of the restart Thurrock nearly extend the lead. Remi Sutton intercepts and gets the ball to Stimson who flicks on to Ronnie Winn only for the ball to catch a divot and spin into Zaki Oualah’s hands. An attempted clearance by Leatherhead is charged down by Lewwis Spence and the ball falls in front of Michael Pindy but Oualah is smartly out of his area and just gets there first leading to a surge down the right wing and a shot that cannons off the base of Jake Jessup’s near post.
Just before the hour mark Thurrock get their second. Morgan is again able to get down the wing and fire the ball hard across goal where it is nearly turned in by a Leatherhead defender who is glad to see the ball just clear the bar. Ronnie Winn puts the corner to the edge of the six yard box and Curtis Ujah making his Thurrock debut wins the header to make it two-nil.
There is still plenty to play for and Jessup is forced into a point blank save with the rebound blasted over the bar. Jessup is also soon the catalyst for the next chance as his punch from a corner finds Pindy who runs box to box jinking left and right before a defender gets a toe to the ball as he prepares to strike. Stimson pounces on a back pass and is forced wide of goal so he plays back to Joe Christou who threads the ball into space for Winn to gain another corner. Christou whips the corner to the near post for Stimson to flick goalwards only to hit a defender.
Both teams continue to compete all the way through to the final minute of added time where Jessup once more has to pull out a double save at close range to keep a clean sheet.
