Lowestoft Town 1 - 0 Thurrock
A long way to go to come home empty handed
Mark Stimson faced the perennial non-league problem of long distance mid-week games and had to make five changes from Saturday’s team sheet including naming himself as a substitute. But this also meant a debut first team appearance for Jamie Price who didn’t look at all out of place and could have had a hat-trick of assists from his set piece deliveries. Jake Jessup was welcomed with the traditional banter given to all players returning to a former club but it was Lowestoft’s current keeper Ben Dudzinski who was voted Man of the Match which pretty much encapsulates the story of the game (and not for the first time this season).
The first chance falls to Lowestoft as Jake Reed gets a shot away on the right hand side of the box beating Jessup at his near post but can’t beat the post itself. Thurrock respond to the near miss as Jamie Price wins the ball in the middle of the pitch and releases Dennis Oli on the right wing, a cross to Joel Nouble beyond the far post sets up a curling effort that glides wide. Reece Morgan puts a free kick into the area and the ball is played around tightly before Ronnie Winn finds an inch and sees his shot deflected for a corner. Price takes the corner and Ronnie Winn is there to meet with a powerful header that clears the bar.
The chances continue as Nouble threatens time and time again on the left wing, this time cutting in and shooting from 25 yards out but the ball is always rising and Dudzinski is untroubled. Nouble, Oli and Leon Antoine link up playing around in a triangle and win another corner. Again it is Jamie Price who swings the ball in and Dudzinski fumbles his catch under the crossbar but quickly grabs at the second attempt.
Thurrock’s strikers queue up to get on the score sheet as Oli, Winn and Nouble all take strong shots from the edge of the area only to see Lowestoft defenders throw their bodies in the way to block the shots back out for the next attempt. Oli has his back to goal and plays a sublime flick into space for the surging Ronnie Winn who draws a point blank save from Dudzinski. George Winn cuts out the ball and runs the length of the pitch before feeding Nouble into the area and again Dudzinski forces the effort past the post. Price puts the ball in and again Dudzinski scrabbles to punch the ball clear from under his cross bar.
In the final minute Lowestoft break down the left wing and the cross bounces through the area, a close range shot that is gathered by Jessup.
Half Time: Lowestoft Town 0 Thurrock 0
Lowestoft start the second half with a second wind and Thurrock sustain a period of pressure which Remi Sutton, Joe Bruce, George Winn and Reece Morgan deal with in a calm manner and the only clear half chance occurs when Jake Reed manages to spin and shoot across the face of the goal where Morgan clears at the far post. Having weathered the storm Thurrock create a couple of their own chances, Price puts his corner closer to the penalty spot this time and Joe Christou glances his header just wide. Nouble forces another save from the left wing before Jessup is forced into his own point blank save.
With just under ten minutes of normal time remaining Lowestoft get the winner. The ball comes in from the left wing and is half cleared and pinged back in where Rory McAuley gets the slightest of touches to put the ball past Jessup.
Thurrock strive to get at least a point as Oli sets off on a mazy run before being clinically scythed down in a scissor challenge two yards outside the box. In the final minute Thurrock again work the ball down the left wing and get a cross into the danger area, Reece Morgan meets the ball on the half volley on the six yard line but once more Dudzinski keeps the ball out.
A disappointing result but a positive performance.
