Margate 2 - 0 Thurrock
Margate keep their unbeaten home streak going
Thurrock travelled to Hartsdown Park to face promotion chasing Margate. The home side were playing their fifth home game in succession and were unbeaten in the previous four and were to maintain their run by the end of the evening.
Thurrock started with a gusty swirling wind at their backs and a fine drizzle in the air which led to many a ball forwards skidding off the 3G surface and out of play.
Margate get the first shot on target which is cleared in the six yard box before the ball finds Timothy Ogunrinde at the edge of Margate’s box but he is unable to get enough power on the shot to bother Lenny Pidgeley. Further Margate pressure follows and Perry Dunn first heads clear before Ben McNamara gathers the follow up.
Reece Morgan gets forward on the wing and shoots from twenty five yards out but the shot skids wide of the far post. Margate break on the right wing but Ronnie Winn, Remi Sutton and Perry Dunn combine to nullify the danger. Margate probe again down the right wing and James Rogers gets a powerful downward header to the cross that Morgan is able to clear to Joel Nouble who curls an effort around the defence but Pidgeley is well placed to take the catch.
Just as it seemed the half would finish level Jordan Chiedozie collected the ball on the wing before cutting in and driving at goal finishing with a crisp shot across McNamara into the far side netting to give Margate the lead. Thurrock nearly pull the goal back in added time as Lewwis Spence lets fly from distance but the ball doesn’t come down enough and clears the bar by about a foot.
Half Time: Margate 1 – 0 Thurrock
Claudio Ribeirio-Goncalves replaces Jordan Clark at half time and the ball is soon into his feet, a neat back heel for Nouble is just beyond the forward’s reach. Sutton powers out of defence with Margate players trailing in his wake to win a throw high up the pitch from which Ribeirio-Goncalves forces a corner that is dealt with by Margate defenders.
Just shy of the hour Margate head home a corner only to see it disallowed as the linesman indicates an offside. Thurrock string together a number of clean passes to progress down the pitch and Morgan gets in a good cross that the alert Pidgeley snatches off Nouble’s head.
Midway through the half and Chiedozie gets his and Margate’s second goal. McNamara parries a powerful head from a corner and Chiedozie gets highest to nod wide of McNamara’s grasp. With around ten minutes left it is an amazing case of déjà-vu as Margate head home another corner only to see this one also disallowed and a Thurrock freel kick.
As the game winds down Thurrock get a couple of half chances to gain a consolation goal. Joel Brown-Bampoe threads the ball through to Nouble to play the ball between the defence for the overlapping Morgan to run onto, his cross is charged down. Mcnamara rolls the ball to Spence who has now replaced Winn at centre half, Spence pings the ball to Ribeirio-Goncalves to win a corner that Margate clear for a throw. Spence has stayed forwards and connects with a stinging shot that ricochets out to Morgan who skins the left back and crosses low and hard across the face of goal but no-one can get a touch.
