Enfield Town 3 - 1 Thurrock
A frustrating result for Thurrock
Dull and drizzly conditions at Donkey Lane as Thurrock looked to extend their winning run but it was not to be as Enfield Town finished the day as winners by three goals to one.
Thurrock were behind very early on in the game as a wayward pass was snapped up by Elliot Benyon to get one on one with Jake Jessup. Jessup stood tall and forced Benyon to hit the post but the ricochet fell nicely for Simon Thomas to tap in with barely six minutes on the clock.
Joe Christou dinked a free kick to Charlie Stimson in the area where he made space and draw a save from Joe Wright low down on the near post. Enfield immediately broke down the right wing and squared the ball across the face of goal with nobody able to get a touch. Thurrock then patiently played the ball out of defence and through the midfield before picking out Dennis Oli at the edge of the area, a one two with Joel Nouble leaves Oli in loads of space to fire past Wright into the far corner to equalise.
Evenly matched and end to end as George Winn gets in a tackle and comes out of defence and the ball is worked out to Oli on the right wing, he cuts inside to Ronnie Winn and Wright has to save again. Jake Jessup saves at the feet of an Enfield forward and is quickly on his feet again to deal with a second shot from the edge of the area.
Joel Nouble limps off the pitch halfway through and is replace by Aruna Kamara and soon after Ronnie Winn beats his man only to see his shot blocked. Stimson pounces on the loose ball and fires just wide. The rest of the half is cagey with neither side making an impression but finishes with a flourish as both sides nearly go into the dressing room with the lead. Enfield cross the ball in from the left and the ball is missed with the goal gaping, Jessup rushes out to palm the follow up over the bar. Thurrock then come close as Reece Morgan gets the ball on the wing and feeds Oli to burst between two defenders and finds Kamara who glances wide.
Half Time: Enfield Town 1 – 1 Thurrock
Again Thurrock fall behind to an early goal, the ball is whipped in from the right wing and Thomas gets his second from six yards.
Remi Sutton sets off on a probing run and Christou battles to get the second ball to set Oli who fires over the bar. Stimson holds up the ball and pulls back to Christou who finds Oli with a diagonal pass and Oli feeds into Stimson who spins and shoots wide of the far post.
With fifteen minutes remaining Reion McFarlane makes his Thurrock debut replacing Ronnie Winn who also looked to have picked up a knock. McFarlane dropped into right back as Reece Morgan pushed up into Winn’s position.
Thurrock rode their luck a little over the next few minutes as Enfield put in three good crosses that were all pushed wide of Jessup’s goals before again nearly equalising. Christou’s throw is flicked on by Oli to Stimson and his snapshot inches past the far post with Wright rooted to the spot. Thurrock keep up the pressure, Sutton’s thirty yard effort has the sting taken off giving Wright an easy catch before a goalmouth scramble comes to an end as Wright gratefully falls on the ball.
Another let-off for Thurrock as an awkward bounce see the ball wriggle past Jessup but McFarlane is across to clear off the line. A final throw of the dice as Timothy Ogunrinde comes on for Jeremiah Kamanzi and Jordan Clark also pushes forwards. Another bout of goalmouth ping pong with Kamara hitting the inside of the post and the ball spinning out.
With so many players committed forwards Thurrock are susceptible to a counter attack and Ryan Blake has space to run in on Jessup shadowed by McFarlane, the three meet and it is Blake who gets the rub of the green as he finds himself with the ball in front of the open net.
