Billericay Town 1 - 0 Thurrock
A gritty display against the league leaders.
Thurrock travelled to Billericay Town for this Boxing Day fixture looking to upset the league leaders.
Billericay have an early chance as the ball is headed down from a corner but Ben McNamara is also down quickly to save. Thurrock counter as Joel Nouble wins the ball high up the pitch and pulls the ball back to Lewwis Spence, Spence plays square to Joe Christou who sees his shot take a deflection for a corner. Alan Julian has to punch the corner clear through a crowd of players but only as far as Christou who side-foots back in but over the bar.
Spence again starts a chance for Thurrock and feeds the ball through the defence for Ronnie Winn to run onto but the striker has the ball cleared off his feet by the covering Dean Inman. Down the other end as Nick Wheeler manages to cut inside and is unlucky to see his shot come off the far upright. Again Thurrock respond as the ball is played over the top for Charlie Stimson, Stimson doesn’t give up and manages to pull the ball back for the bye-line to Michael Pindy six yards out but Pindy mis-hits in front of the open goal and the chance has gone.
Thurrock’s midfield and defence continue to work together cohesively to keep Billericay contained and are quick to move forwards given the opportunity. Pindy and Christou play a one-two to get room for a fierce ball across the face of goal but nobody is in place to take advantage. Remi Sutton is felled just outside the area and Christou’s free kick is just wide of the post.
Thurrock’s woodwork takes another bashing as Curtis Ujah slips and Jake Robinson is able to take advantage to unleash a thunderbolt which cannons off the crossbar.
Half-Time: Billericay Town 0 – 0 Thurrock
An early chance for Billericay in the second half as well as Louie Theophanous gets onto a ball over the top, Mcnamara narrows the angle and the shot is wide.
Pindy works the right wing and gets a corner, Ronnie Winn swings the ball in to the top far corner and Julian has to scramble to tip the ball over the bar. Christou takes a near identical corner from the other side with the ball evading everyone and going out half a yard beyond the far post.
Billericay get their goal just before the hour mark. The lively Sam Deering cuts in from the left wing and McNamara saves for a corner, the corner gets flicked onto the back post and Jake Robinson is on his own to head in from close range.
Unbowed, Ronnie Winn tackles in midfield and jinks past two before shooting, the ball takes an awkward bounce in front of Julian who bundles the ball wide with Stimson waiting to pounce.
Timothy Ogunrinde comes on for Charlie Stimson and is soon in action. Spence collects the ball yet again in the middle of the pitch and gives it to Sutton in space on the left. Sutton switches play finding Ogunrinde out on the right wing, Ogunrinde flashes the ball to the near post to pick out Nouble whose header is just wide of the upright.
Despite their best efforts Thurrock can’t break down the organised Billericay defence but can be pleased with their determined performance.
