Dorking Wanderers 2 - 0 Thurrock
A tough game on a heavy, narrow pitch
Goals ten minutes or so either side of half time saw Dorking Wanderers take the points completing a perfect Christmas for them. However, it could have been a different story were it not for the woodwork and some outstanding saves from Dorking keeper Slavomir Huk.
Thurrock crafted their first chance in the first five minutes with Michael Pindy winning a corner which is blocked for a throw taken by Joe Christou. The ball bounces across the area to Joel Nouble who shoots over. Barely a minute later Christou feeds the ball forwards to Ronnie Winn to hold up and play square to Lewwis Spence. A step forward and Spence blasts goalwards drawing the first point blank save from Huk as he gets a palm to the ball, Remi Sutton and Spence get on the rebound and work the ball back into the area before it is finally cleared.
Dorking get a free kick just inside Thurrock’s half and it’s taken long to the far post and fired back across the goal hitting the outside of the opposite upright. Christou and Pindy link up again before finding Nouble who works his way into the area but can only toe poke straight at Huk.
Dorking get their opening goal as a good ball is put between Perry Dunn and Remi Sutton for James McShane to run onto and fire across Ben McNamara into the far side of the goal. Thurrock respond immediately as Spence wins the ball and splits Dorking’s defence for Ronnie Winn to see Huk make another point blank save, Nouble follows up on the rebound only to see Isaac Philpott clear off the line.
Then something unusual and strange. Thurrock are awarded an indirect free kick just inside Dorking’s penalty area, presumably for Huk holding the ball too long. Spence touches the ball a yard to his right for Christou who strikes the ball cleanly past the wall to cannon off the left upright.
The final minutes see end to end action. Timothy Ogunrinde crosses in from the right wing and the ball sticks in the area before being cleared to Matthew Briggs to break away and bear down on McNamara who pulls out a fine save of his own with Perry Dunn then calmly cushioning a header back into his arms.
Half Time: Dorking Wanderers 1 – 0 Thurrock
Thurrock manufacture two early chances. Remi Sutton surges forwards shrugging off tackles before finding Spence who switches onto his right foot and shoots beating Huk but again the woodwork comes to Dorking’s rescue. Thurrock then play the ball square along the back four before sending the ball over the top for Spence to run onto, Huk is out of his area and does enough so that Spence can only touch the ball over the bar.
Dorking get their second with a long ball out of defence that bounces awkwardly to release James McShane. Ronnie Winn, now at centre half, and Ben McNamara force McShane wide but he is able to find the net from a tight angle.
Thurrock push on to get on the scoresheet. Joel Nouble works along the edge of the box but can only find a weak shot that Huk gathers. Sutton dodges his way in and out working forwards again before feeding Christou but his shot is dragged wide. Dorking break from defence and this time it is Ben McNamara making a good save. But soon Sutton is on a mission again driving in from the left wing and this time it is Michael Pindy who is set up but again Huk gets something on the shot to block and Ogunrinde has the ball taken off his foot at the last moment as he challenges the rebound.
A final half chance as Pindy swings the ball in and the ball loops over Huk but again is cleared off the line.
