Kingstonian 0 - 1 Thurrock
A determined performance sees Thurrock get back to back wins and remain unbeaten in 2018 so far
Thurrock visited Fetcham Grove for the third time this season and again returned home undefeated to retain their perfect record for 2018.
But it was by no means easy. As early as the first minute Andre McCollin gets behind Thurrock’s defence and Ben McNamara does well to smother the ball. Thurrock respond as Charlie Stimson finds Michael Pindy out on the wing to put in a low cross that is cleared by Sean Francis.
The game soon becomes a battle in midfield as both sides largely cancel each other but when the ball does break out it is end to end. Alec Fiddes times his run to stay onside as he goes beyond Thurrock’s defensive line and again McNamara is out quickly to block the shot and the ball is quickly forwards to Ronnie Winn who holds the ball before laying back to Joel Nouble. Thurrock swarm forwards but Nouble’s ball to Stimson is blocked but picked up by Reece Morgan who gets in a cross that is half blocked to Joe Christou, Christou’s first shot is also blocked and his second clears the bar.
Joe Christou gets the winner on the half hour mark. Lewwis Spence is fouled in Kingstonian’s D. Christou waits patiently for Kingstonian to set up and the referee to be satisfied before striking powerfully around the wall, Rob Tolfrey gets a hand to the ball but is unable to keep it out the net.
Kingstonian are still finding chances with the lively Andre McCollin. First he again gets released into space on the right wing but shoots high over the bar. Minutes later McCollin gets on the end of a ball in from the wing and slots home but the goal is chalked off by the assistant’s raised flag for offside.
Two chances for Thurrock in the dying moments of the half. Remi Sutton clears the ball downfield to Ronnie Winn who takes a touch to steady himself before shooting on the half volley and Tolfrey does very well to push the ball wide for a corner. And in added time Winn feeds into Stimson before overlapping him, Stimson back heels the ball into Winn’s path and Pindy is barely an inch away from getting a toe to his cross.
Half Time: Kingstonian 0 – 1 Thurrock
Kingstonian come out for the second half with all guns blazing and have half a dozen half chances in the first ten minutes. Three times the ball is worked in from the right wing but Thurrock remain organised and each time the final shots are wide. A corner bounces around in the area before McNamara is able to fall on the ball.
The tone is now set for the second half as Thurrock struggle to get out of their own half or keep the ball for any length of time. But neither are they bowed as every player switches up a gear and finds the energy to track back and cover each other to stifle and frustrate Kingstonian. Bodies are put in the way of the ball, last second tackles and clearances come from all over the pitch. On the odd occasion that the K’s do get through the ball finds McNamara’s arms for regulation saves.
A hard earned win but another outstanding team performance as every player dug deep to get the job done.
