Thurrock 0 - 2 Staines Town
Thurrock's little run comes to an end
Thurrock’s unbeaten run in 2018 came to an end as Staines Town score twice in the second half.
Early action as Joe Christou intercepts the ball and feeds Joel Nouble who sees his shot deflected for a corner. Perry Dunn meets the corner with a side foot volley that narrowly clears the bar. Staines Town have their own early chance with Ben McNamara parrying Mohamed Bettamer’s fierce shot into the path of Max Worsfold but the ball bounces off him and wide of the post.
Christou gets in another superb tackle and sends Michael Pindy away on the right wing, his cross is cut out just before it reaches Charlie Stimson. Bettamer twists and turns and fires drawing another good save from McNamara at the near post, the ball works across to Worsford who shoots straight at McNamara.
As in the previous few games Thurrock stand toe to toe and slug it out in midfield and again chances for either side are few and far between until Thurrock win a throw high up the field. Christou finds Stimson who quickly plays the ball into space for Lewwis Spence to run onto but his shot is wide. Pindy turns inside and out to win another corner, Christou again finds a Thurrock player, this time Curtis Ujah who is just over the bar. McNamara has taken a knock to his head saving at the feet but continues and soon has to block another strong effort from Elliot Buchanan.
In the final minute of the half both teams strive to go into the break ahead and McNamara gets his palms stung again before Thurrock progress down the right wing with Pindy who back heels the ball for the overlapping Reece Morgan, his cross is spilt by Herdman but he recovers before Spence can pounce.
Half Time: Thurrock 0 – 0 Staines Town
Ben McNamara is unable to continue for the second half so youngster Toby Smith gets his Thurrock debut and first senior minutes. Ten minutes in Staines Town get their first. Thurrock have a free kick which is blocked and sent directly downfield to break on the left wing and get to the bye line before a low hard cross for Lewis Driver to tap in from 6 yards.
Another Christou throw nearly leads to an equaliser from Spence before Staines get their second. A corner is pinged in and is scrambled around in the area before being bundled over the line despite strong shouts for a foul. Thurrock dig in and battle for every ball but can’t quite find the final ball to get through Staines' defence until ten minutes before time as it all clicks and Thurrock flow forwards deep into Staines half, Claudio Ribeirio-Goncalves has quick feet to get into the area and Herdman does really well to keep the shot out of the net.
Staines push on again in the final five minutes and Smith makes two reaction saves to deny any further score.
