Harrow Borough 2 - 0 Thurrock
No points for Thurrock in West London
Thurrock travelled to Earlsmead where a very heavy and slippery pitch awaited them along with a constant fine drizzle.
Despite the conditions Thurrock had a great chance for an early lead. Timothy Ogunrinde back heels the ball into Ronnie Winn’s path and despite being fouled he is strong enough to pull away from his defender and with the referee signalling advantage gets a shot away but it is high and clears the bar.
It is Harrow who manage to make the better chances in the next half hour as Thurrock often struggle to keep on their feet. First Harrow break from defence but the final effort is blazed well over the bar. A few minutes later a corner is messily dealt with before Thurrock finally clear their lines. A long ball out of defence from Harrow is headed on by Michael Bryan into the path of Charles Banya who finds himself one-on-one with Ben McNamara, McNamara is swiftly off his line to save with his legs at close range. Banya again soon breaks free but this time Curtis Ujah and Perry Dunn combine to block the Harrow forwards shot for a corner. Another scrambled clearance before the danger is dealt with.
Thurrock start to get back into the game in the final fifteen minute as Jordan Clark connects with Ronnie Winn’s corner and glances his header just wide of the post. Harrow progress down the right wing from the resulting goal kick and the ball is bundled into Thurrock’s net but ruled out for offside. Reece Morgan nicks the ball in the middle of the pitch and fires the ball forwards for Ogunrinde to tap on to Winn who drags his shot wide.
Remi Sutton clears out of defence along the line for Joel Nouble, Nouble picks a clever pass for Winn and is unlucky to see it deflect off a defender for a corner. Jordan Clark whips in the corner and Harrow keeper Melvin Minter gets a fist to the ball back to Clark but the second effort is cleared to safety. Nouble beats his man on the left wing and sees his cross cleared as far as Clark, Clark recycles the ball out to Joe Oseyemi who has travelled high up the pitch on the right wing, Oseyemi plays the ball inside to Lewwis Spence who spins and shoots in a single fluid motion drawing an outstanding save from Minter as he punches the ball over the bar.
The tricky Banya is again sent through on goal, he jinks and shoots only to see Ujah in the way to block the ball over the bar. Oseyemi brings the ball forwards before again feeding Spence, a defence splitting ball for Nouble to run onto looked to be too strong and Minter drops to gather the ball but somehow spills the ball and Nouble has neat feet to pick the ball out into space and shoot from an incredibly tight angle and is unlucky to see the ball strike the outside of the upright. One final chance in added time as Ogunrinde wriggles his way past Harrow’s left back but his cross is cleared.
Half Time: Harrow Borough 0 – 0 Thurrock
A double substitution at half time for Thurrock as Joel Brown-Bampoe and Charlie Stimson replace Curtis Ujah and Timothy Ogunrinde. But five minutes in Harrow Borough take the lead. Bryan gets the ball in from the right wing and Kurtis Cumberbatch is on hand to tap home at close range. Just a couple of minutes later Banya comes close again as he tracks across the edge of the area before unleashing a shot that McNamara parries over the bar.
Thurrock spend the rest of the half largely on the front foot looking for an equaliser. Sutton charges out of defence to the edge of the Harrow box before feeding Stimson but his shot is blocked. Thurrock win a corner which is played short by Winn to Morgan to cross to the far post picking out Oseyemi but his header is wide. Clark carries the ball forwards before playing out to Morgan on the wing, a little tap into Stimson who gets pushed wide by the Borough defence but still in control he pulls the ball back to Sutton to shoot from twenty five yards but deflected. Perry Dunn is the next to find Morgan as an available outlet and again Morgan finds Stimson but once again a Harrow defender gets a limb in the way.
Morgan’s throw high up the pitch is played square to Spence who stings Minter’s fingers as the Borough custodian again keeps them in the game. Oseyemi drives Thurrock forwards and players queue up to shoot as Sutton and Reece Cave both see shots blocked. Five minutes left as Dunn clears and the ball works through to Cave , his shot takes the slightest of deflections to take it an inch beyond the far post.
Against the run of play Harrow get their second goal with three minutes remaining. A long ball forwards is initially cleared by Dunn as far as Cumberbatch who finds a fine curling shot that is beyond the reach of McNamara. As ever Thurrock heads stay high and they continue to try and get something out of the game. Spence is providing yet another captain’s performance as he battles his way through several tackles before seeing his shot blocked. One last chance for a consolation as Cave’s free kick floats past everyone to the back post where Dunn has ghosted in but just can’t get a touch.
