Wingate & Finchley 2 - 4 Thurrock
Thurrock come from behind twice to take the points
Thurrock took a journey around the North Circular today for their game against Wingate & Finchley. Wingate took an early lead against the run of play but Thurrock drew level before a goal in added time saw them go into the dressing room a goal down. Two goals inside the first ten minutes saw Thurrock get their noses in front sealing the victory ten minutes from time.
Thurrock make the early running with three good chances in the first five minutes. Jordan Clark gains possession and plays back to Reece Morgan to cross into Charlie Stimson, Stimson heads the ball onto Lewwis Spence who battles forwards before giving the ball back to Stimson who lays out a teasing ball for Remi Sutton to run onto blazing across the face of goal just beyond the far post. Next up Joel Nouble works his way down the left wing and sends in a tempting cross that is just beyond Spence. And Spence is involved again as Morgan clears from defence for Spence to dribble half the length of the pitch before firing high.
Yet, with virtually their first foray forwards Wingate & Finchley take the lead. Layne Eadie travels with the ball from left back and takes a shot to nothing from distance and is delighted as a deflection sees it past Ben McNamara and into the net.
Another chance for Spence to get on the scoresheet, Morgan’s throw is chested by Stimson onto Spence who finds the target and draws a good save from Shane Gore who gets down swiftly. Crisp passing between Ronnie Winn, Sutton and Nouble creates space for Winn to shoot and win a corner. Winn finds Clark to take the ball on the half volley but wide.
Wingate & Finchley come close to extending the lead as they break from another Thurrock attack culminating in a shot aimed at the far corner that is touched behind to safety. Soon after, Thurrock break from a Wingate corner through Sutton to find Nouble and continue his run into the box, Nouble tries to gently lift the ball back into his path but the briefest of touches from a defender takes it beyond Sutton but again it is the determined Spence who gets to the clearance, walks through two and side foots low just inside the post but again Gore is equal to the task getting down to touch the ball round the post.
Ten minutes to go and another snapshot from distance from Wingate that McNamara needs two goes at to save, first parrying the ball to take the sting out, before safely claiming. Thurrock get back on level terms, a long ball from McNamara is chased down by Winn who rides a tackle before pulling back to Nouble, the cross goes in and inevitably it is Spence on the end with a trademark left foot rocket. And with a minute left a Sutton free kick is touched down by Stimson for Spence but slightly over the bar.
It’s looking like the teams will go level into half time but Reece Beckles-Richards has other ideas and strikes from thirty five yards, the ball dips and curls and despite McNamara’s best effort finds the net.
Half Time: Wingate & Finchley 2 -1 Thurrock
Thurrock enter the second half with a passion and the second equaliser is soon found and is a fine team goal. McNamara rolls the ball out and it is played through the defence up to Winn, Winn splits the defence with a ball into Clark who calmly shoots through Gore’s legs. And a couple of minutes later Clark gets his second for Thurrock to take the lead. This time it is Winn onto the through ball and as he rounds the keeper he is brought down and a penalty awarded. Clark steps up and sends Gore the wrong way.
Wingate make a double substitution to try and deal with the resurgent Thurrock but to little effect. James Goode gets in another solid tackle to halt Wingate’s progress and pings the ball forwards for Winn and then into space for Spence but Gore is out of his area to put the ball into touch. The throw bounces around in the area until finally Gore backs a close range block to deny Clark his hat-trick.
Midway through the second half James Goode is shown two yellow cards in quick succession and is dismissed from the field of play. Perry Dunn is adjudged to have fouled in the area and Wingate get their own penalty and a chance to equalise. Freddy Moncur though wastes the opportunity as the ball clears the bar by a good margin. To Thurrock’s credit they don’t park the bus and stay with two up to top and the reward comes with a fourth goal and a two goal margin with ten to go. Sutton brings the ball down the left wing and taps inside to Stimson, he holds the ball up before putting into space where both Nouble and Spence are calling for the ball. It is nearly too perfect as both players hesitate leaving it to the other before Spence reacts and swings a boot to send the ball golawards with a deflection taking it past Gore.
Both teams keep going to the final whistle and a Wingate shot hits the far post and bounces back into play before being cleared downfield for a Thurrock free kick that Spence (also looking for a hat-trick) curls around the wall to see Gore again swiftly across his line to tip round the post.
