Harlow Town 3 - 2 Thurrock
Thurrock's unbeaten run comes to an end
The persistent rain that saw so many games postponed had reduced to an annoying fine drizzle by the time the game kicked off at The McCullochs Arena.
Looking to extend their unbeaten run Thurrock get an early chance with Jordan Clark seeing his goalbound shot knocked to safety by Harlow Town keeper’s legs. Yet soon after it is Harlow who take the lead. The ball is played into Thurrock’s area and after a scramble to try and clear the ball it falls to Fabion Simms who curls the ball into the bottom corner.
With quarter of an hour gone a rash tackle from Harlow’s Robbie Martin sees the referee brandish a red card. The game compresses into the midfield for a while before a curling pass finds Alex Read who hesitates before shooting wide of the far post. From the goal kick Thurrock launch an attack and a cross field pass finds Reece Morgan who curls a cross in from the right wing and Josh Pollard gets an important header to put the ball behind with Charlie Stimson and Ronnie Winn both poised to capitalise if Pollard had made a mistake.
Thurrock get their equaliser ten minutes before half time. Remi Sutton brings the ball out of defence and plays a crisp pass into Ronnie Winn’s feet, Winn drops a shoulder and spins his marker, takes a steadying touch and powers the ball past Hughes into the far corner. And two minutes later they nearly take the lead, again Sutton starts the move and the ball is moved quickly to Joel Nouble and on to Winn before coming back to Sutton to unleash a fierce shot that Hughes parries well.
Harlow were just thinking they would get to half time on level pegging when Thurrock nosed ahead. James Goode put the ball between two defenders into Morgan’s path, his cross was blocked but only to Clark who put the ball on a plate for Lewwis Spence to bury the ball in trademark fashion.
Half Time: Harlow Town 1 – 2 Thurrock
Thurrock get two early chances as the second half gets underway. Reece Morgan sees Hughes off his line and tries to lob him from distance but the ball lands on the roof of the net. Joel Nouble picks up the ball on the left wing and with his tricky feet he gets past his defender to get his cross in. The initial cross is blocked, as are shots from both Clark and Morgan.
The next goal, however, is a Harlow equaliser. Having won a corner, Christian Scales runs over to take and puts in a vicious in swinger that Ben McNamara is unable to keep out. A few minutes later and Dexter Peter is put under pressure and is able to play his way out of danger and release Nouble who in turn puts Winn in for a half chance that gets turned behind.
Nouble is again busy and sets Spence who see his shot blocked before Harlow win another corner which is initially cleared by Clark but again Scales gets a good effort on goal which hits the post.
Mark Stimson brings on Ellis Brown to replace James Goode to increase the attacking options and within moments it nearly pays off straight away. Sutton’s throw toward Stimson sees him let the ball run through his legs for Winn to put the ball across the face of goal just inches beyond Brown’s outstretched foot. From the resulting goal kick Harlow get the winner, a massive kick from Hughes takes one bounce before Jared Small hits a worldie volley that flies into the net.
Thurrock continue to press for an equaliser in the final quarter of an hour. Nouble comes in from the left wing and wins a corner, Winn sends it to the far post for Clark to head back to Spence who loops an effort onto the crossbar. A final chance to salvage a point in injury time as Lewwis Spence fires in a low cross for Winn to tap in from 2 yards but again David Hughes pulls off an outstanding point blank save.
