Kingstonian 3 - 3 Thurrock | Buildbase FA Trophy
Thurrock come from behind three times to force a replay
The teams walked out to an impromptu firework display in the field behind the ground which led to a delayed kick off until the smoke cleared. This was a portent of things to come as Kingstonian took the lead three times but each time Thurrock pegged them back to bring about a replay at Ship Lane on Tuesday 31st October.
Both sides started off at pace and Lewis Down has to rush to the edge of his area to clear. Charlie Stimson works into the area and slides the ball to Ronnie Winn who flashes his shot just wide of the near post. Joel Nouble fashions some space on the left wing and crosses to the far post, the ball bounces in the area for Rob Tolfrey to grab as Jordan Clark is bearing down. Soon Clark is carrying the ball through midfield before cutting back to Lewwis Spence, a deflection sees his shot over the bar from a corner. From the resulting goal kick Kingstonian break down the left wing and Adetayo Osifuwa gets in a great tackle to halt the danger.
Kingstonian took the lead for the first time as Lewis Down gets caught in possession and Noel Mbo is able to walk the ball into the net. The lead lasts barely two minutes though as Joe Christou gets a sight of goal from thirty yards and unleashes a thunderbolt. Noel Mbo restores the lead five minutes later from the left wing and cutting back onto his right foot and hitting a worldie into the corner of the far upright and cross-bar.
End to end chances until half time follow. Osifuwa, Clark and Christou pass around in a triangle before pinging to Nouble to pull back to Charlie Stimson who mishits his shot. K’s shoot from twenty five yards and the ball somehow gets through the crowded area and almost wriggles between Down’s legs. Mbo has a nailed on chance for his hat trick but fluffs his effort in front of goal.
Half Time: Kingstonian 2 Thurrock 1
Thurrock come out for the second half very much on the front foot looking to equalise. Within the first five minutes Spence, Clark and Nouble are one touch passing to give Remi Sutton space on the left wing, a one-two with Stimson gives room for a shot into the side netting. Moments later Ronnie Winn is released by Clark to shoot across Tolfrey and inches wide of the far post.
Joe Bruce and Anthony Furlonge remain alert at the edge of the area to keep Kingstonian at bay and set Ronnie Winn off on a jinky run downfield that is halted by a foul just short of the area. Spence curls the ball around the wall and is dipping under the bar only for Tolfrey to get a finger tip and out for a corner. But Spence is zeroed in now and soon another blistering shot from distance is too hot for Tolfrey to hold onto and Clark has more desire to reach the rebound tipping it into the net amongst a melee of players.
Leon Antoine replaces Anthony Furlonge and Ronnie Winn drops back into defence and is soon teaming up with Bruce to clear the ball forwards for Nouble who again draws players to make space for Stimson to draw a cracking save at full stretch.
A case of déjà-vu as a poor punch from a Kingstonian corner allows Paul Rodgers to blast home from six yards to give Kingstonian the lead for the third time but again short lived. Remi Sutton floats in a free kick met by Leon Antoine to head back across goal and again Jordan Clark wants it more with a powerful header.
Thurrock have the edge with chances in the final fifteen. Spence nicks the ball and dances past three challenges before shooting straight at Tolfrey. Nouble collects from a free kick and again is too strong holding up the ball before knocking across the area for Clark to knock wide. In the final minute Spence takes a leaf out of the Beckham book of football and tries to chip Tolfrey from the centre circle, Tolfrey does well to back pedal and get a hand to the ball. Spence takes the corner and sends it to the far post for Clark who gets the header but unable to get on target. A final effort for K’s down the right wing is stopped in its tracks by Ronnie Winn sliding in to clear.
Replay is Tuesday 31st October with 7.45pm kick off.
