The news from Timperley Lacrosse this week

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER WK 7 4TH Nov

INTRODUCTION
We are already well into the season and last week was a generally good one for Timperley Lacrosse.

The Women’s team recovered after last week’s narrow one goal defeat to Stockport to enjoy a comfortable 15-3 win over Liverpool. It looks like being tough at the top of women’s Lacrosse this season with Oxton, Stockport, and Timperley fighting it out for the honours.
The A team gave an encouraging performance in defeating Sheffield A in the 1st Round of the Junior Flags by 12-7. On Saturday they face a tough visit to Rochdale who were our nemesis last season. It will be a good test for our improving A team.

Amongst the Junior Boys there were emphatic wins for the U16 with a 16-0 win over Poynton and the U12A who won a comfortable 24-3 victory over Cheadle Hulme. Perhaps more worthy of comment was a very creditable performance by Timperley U14 away to Cheadle. We have struggled for numbers all season but the team has a group of very capable players who are the equal of any other club. There was a first outing for the U12B team who took on Rochdale on the Timperley ATP. In a tight game the teams were tied at 5-5 at ¾ time but Timperley ran out of legs to go down 5-9. An encouraging start.

The Saturday POP sessions, where it all starts, has been attracting very encouraging numbers. Congratulations to Alan Holdsworth and his team.

MATCH REPORTS
Sat 4th Nov

Women v Liverpool Home Won 15-3

From the first draw this looked to be a good, competitive match. The ball transitioned up and down the pitch several times as both teams struggled to find the back of the net but after several minutes Vanessa Nice scored Timperley's opener. This calmed our nerves somewhat but it was clear Liverpool had come to give us a good fight. Liverpool's number 3 dominated in midfield and attack, scoring a hat trick in the game which kept us on our toes. The up and down nature of play continued but Timperley seemed to have more luck getting it in the goal, leaving the final score 15 - 3 to Timperley.

MVP for Timperley went to Annie Ferris, whose début for the blues saw her make many significant saves, massively impacting the outcome of the game. We look forward to having her between the pipes again.

Men’s A v Sheffield A Home Won 16-10
A strong Timperley A team entertained Sheffield A at Stockport Road in a 1st Round of the Junior Flags. Timperley always looked likely winners but Sheffield did not come across the Pennines just to roll over and the game was competitive from the first whistle until the last.
Timperley opened up an early 2-0 lead but were pegged back to 2-2 at the end of the 1st quarter. The second quarter saw Timperley extend their lead to be 6-4 ahead at half time. The third quarter saw more of the same and Timperley led 9-5 at the break. The final quarter was nip and tuck but Timperley kept their noses in front to take a deserved 12-7 win. All credit to Sheffield who were competitive throughout despite running with a smaller squad.

The Timperley defence was sound throughout, backed by an outstanding performance by 16 year old Gregor Alan in goal. The midfield, anchored by the experienced Jamie Southworth and Conor Turner, worked hard and supported the other teenage midfielders. In attack Tim Holdsworth, the old man of the team, Greg Sandy and the talented Ed Loveland were an effective unit.

Scorers
Greg Sandy 4.4
Ed Loveland 3, 2
Tim Holdsworth 2.4
Louis Humblet 1.0
Marius Robinson 1.0
Pat McGowan 1.0

Boy’s U16 v Poynton Home Won 16-0
A comfortable win this week beating Poynton 16 v 0. Some key performances contributed to this win. Firstly Ollie Lee stepped up to take the Face Offs this week and won 100%, which give us plenty of attacking possession. The second was a very solid display from our midfield and attack, meaning we made the most of the possession. Notably Harry and Dan both had great games, both scoring 6 and having 2 assists each. The defence didn’t have too much to do this week but were compact when needed to be.

Harry Alty 6. 2
Dan Flisk 6.2
Tom Wallis 2.0
Ewan Ginger 1.2
Will Hirst 1.0

Boy’s U14 v Cheadle Away Lost 10-17
First game back after the half term break and once again we struggled to field a team. Josh Spinks was ruled out late after suffering a broken nose, we sorely missed his strength and energy, wishing him a speedy recovery. We also missed Ollie Hancock and his strong defensive communication.

Cheadle were also short on numbers so we played 8 aside.

Cheadle were quite a big outfit especially in the midfield but our Lacrosse in parts was exceptional and we found ourselves 4-2 down at quarter end but were very much in the game. Goals in the first quarter were scored by Joe Tomlinson & Laurie. Cai, who once again stepped up an age group and impressed, assisted along with George, with the pass of the day.

Quarter 2 and again an excellent effort in all aspects of the game. Our composure is in need of improvement, game of lacrosse is most definitely decided on whose got possession and we gave the ball away cheaply. In saying that the retention has improved markedly. We won the quarter 3-3 but should have scored more and on one of the goals conceded we should have defended better. (HT 7-5), goals scored in this quarter by Joe Tomlinson x 2 and a super solo goal by Matty Fazal, who also assisted both of Joe’s goals.

Quarter 3, the big midfield of Cheadle was taking control but our midfield battled with great commitment and pride. We lost the quarter 5-2. Both goals coming from Cai with his second being goal of the game picking up the ball on the half way line he proceeded to dance a merry dance around Cheadle defenders to then throw a great fake on the keeper & finish easily. The first was a great team goal finished off by Cai & superbly fed by Matty Fazal, who had his best game of the season. 12-7 was score at end of Q3.

Quarter 4. On a heavy pitch our legs were going, but we defended greatly Callum Legg all game was a one man band at times. Despite being out run by a much more physical team we were in the ascendency and got it to 12-10 with goals coming from Cai x 2 & Joe. Assisted by Matty, Mackenzie & Alfie, I have to mention the Alfie had best take out of the day, he maybe our slightest player but on a player physically twice his size he mullered him. He may be small but he hits like a giant. This quarter we lost 5-3. The game we lost 17-10 but we are seeing an improvement, & the players need to stay positive as when we do get everyone on the pitch & we keep working hard in training, we will see the benefits. Thanks to the parents who came to support it’s greatly appreciated by us all but especially the boys. Dan & Marius gave the MOTM to George who yet again was very impressive. A special mention to both Callum & Matt who were also exceptional. But I would like to add that everyone of the boys stepped up to the plate on Saturday and all had their best games of the season. As a management team we were not only impressed with them but proud.

Boy’s U12A v Cheadle Hulme Home Won 24-3
This week the U12A took on Cheadle Hulme at home. Timperley got off to a flying start moving the ball well and goals from Jim, Jack 2, Owen 2 and Ben Edwards saw Timperley lead 6-1 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was more of the same with Timperley dominating possession. The midfield and attack took control and scored 9 more with goals from Owen 4, Jack 3, and Ben Edwards 2. Halftime score 15-2. Timperley once again dominated possession in the third quarter. Cheadle Hulme did create a few chances but solid defending from Alex, Toby and Ben Lawton helped Tom In goal keep them at bay. Goals from Jim 2, Ben Edwards 2, Owen and an assist from out marauding goal keeper Tom saw score at end of the third quarter 20-2.

The pace of the game slowed in the final quarter with the boys controlling possession and moving the ball round well. 2 goals from Jim got the scoring back underway and a first goal of the season for Cameron Hope who worked really hard all game saw Timperley once more dominate the game and a final goal from Ben Edwards saw the final score 24-3.
This week the whole team played well and it is difficult to pick out anyone who made that extra effort. Kuba and Toby had great games but Man of the Match this week for Timperley was Jack Dearden.

Stats
Owen Shuttleworth 7, 5
Ben Edwards 6, 2
Jack Dearden 5, 2
Jim Hartley 5, 1
Cameron Hope 1, 1
Kuba Jenkins 0, 1
Tom Allen 0, 1

Boy’s U12B v Rochdale Home Lost 5-9
The Under 12 B team were pleased to welcome a friendly Rochdale for an 8 aside home match. Rochdale were off to a quick start with 3 goals soon in the first quarter. Timperley took a little while to settle in but soon started putting pressure on the Rochdale defence, and were rewarded with a goal in the last seconds of the quarter by number 52, George Rommel. The home side were straight into attack in the second quarter and after some excellent saves by the Rochdale keeper, No 52 scored another 2 goals. Rochdale kept up the pressure and scored 1 more, ending half time 3-4 to the visitors. The 3rd quarter open with lots of pressure on the Timperley goal. Lucca Read made some excellent saves and the defenders kept pushing back, but Rochdale were eventually rewarded with a 5th goal. Timperley quickly fought back and a well deserved goal by Hamza Rahman was followed up by another for scoring machine George Rommel. An exciting end to the 3rd quarter with a 5-5 draw. It would have suited Timperley to end the game there, but Rochdale drew on all their reserves of energy and gained the momentum with four quick goals in the last quarter, ending the game 5-9 to the visitors. Despite this, it was good to see the energy and teamwork of our home team, and it has highlighted some areas of focus for the next few training sessions. Outstanding play by George Rommel in attack, with great support from Hamza, and a special mention for Matty Harrison's determination in the face-off. Thanks to Brendan for great coaching throughout, and to Alan and Rhona for fair and directive refereeing.

Scorers
George Rommel 4.0
Hamza Rahmann 1-0

Girl’s U18 White v Brooklands Lost 5-20
We had 15 players, with three players from the young U15s joining us (Jasmine T, Alice A and Mia B).

We had a good warm up before the game where we were picking up the ground balls and passing well. Once the game started, under competitive pressure our skills were not as good. We allowed our opponents to score far too easy and made too many mistakes. At the end, we lost 20 - 5 to a good side but the gap should not have been this big. If we were a bit more clinical in front of the goal and played more often like the 10 minute spell in the first half when we gave Brooklands no opportunity to score, the gap would have been less. When we settle and pass around we are dangerous.

We need to be a bit more aggressive and close to our opponents for them to feel us and be annoyed of our presence as well as that old thing of being hungry for every ball!

After the game, with the girls and later with Lucy, we looked at what we need to work on, which are:
• More communication and shouting on the pitch.
• Practise picking up ground balls on grass.
• How to defend against fast break and organise in defence.
• Passing. Improve accuracy and practise short passing.
• Working in the back.
• Learn and practise set plays.
• Work on small bucket defending.
• Get onto cutters to stop feeding.

I have spoken to Jo and we will try to incorporate or work on as many of those before our next game.

Man of the match: Ellie Racle - worked tirelessly and unselfishly on all parts of the pitch.

Best goal (new category), any 3 from our 5 goals (Jodie passed and Alice scored and Jasmine passed and Emma scored). Settle; pass around, cut, shoot and goal. More of this and we will do much better.

Scores and assist.
Alice Allan 3/1
Jodie Pollard -/3
Jasmine Torevell 1/1
Emma Coghlan 1/-

Girl’s U18 Blue v Oxton Won 8-7
Oxton away is always a tough game for any TLC game and this was no exception. We had 4 players missing which enabled me to change the team in a way that I thought would stifle Oxton.

We had to be strong and solid from the start and build form there, this we did to great effect coming up to the quarter hour we were 4-1 in the lead. We were playing some excellent Lacrosse but still had room for improvement. Oxton were not going to lie down and came back before the half to end at 6-4 to TLC at half time. As with many games the break didn't help and broke up the continuity, Oxton coming out strong in the second half with our defence in fine form.

We kept our cool and ended the game 8-7 winners, we need to work on settled play keeping the ball to run the clock off, tracking back as soon as their keeper has the ball.

A special mention to Gabrielle Wardle who had a great game in goal and Anna Green an U15 who also stepped up with great effect.

Thought for the week
I spend a few hours every Wednesday and Saturday mornings and afternoons watching Lacrosse. It has always been clear to me that Lacrosse is a fundamentally difficult sport to play. The skills required are complicated and only acquired by significant dedication to practice. In sports like basketball, netball and rugby physical attributes are paramount. The skills are relatively simple although they can obviously be honed with practice but the physical advantages will always be the important ones. Even in soccer being big and fast is becoming imporant

It is obvious watching Lacrosse which players have put in the necessary practice. To be a good Lacrosse player it is not enough to turn up to practice once a week, although that is essential. It is at practice that players learn to operate as a team. But in Lacrosse you cannot operate as a team unless you can catch and throw! A statement of the obvious but it is not great when you watch an attack that is unable to string more than a couple of passes together. If you want to know the level we aspire to then go on to You Tube and watch some Division 1 Lacrosse (Men’s and women’s).

Lacrosse is an easy sport to practice on your own. All you need is a wall (Preferably windowless) and spend 15 minutes every morning and evening throwing against the wall and catching the rebound.

In recent times there have been some notable lacrosse dynasties – the 3 Powell brothers at Syracuse: the Thompsens, 3 brothers and a cousin who have starred at Albany and for the Iroquois: the amazing 8 Stanwicks - 4 brothers and 4 sisters from Baltimore who all went on to play Div 1 Lacrosse. Their success was due to the practice they put in to get their stick skills.

I know that coaches repeatedly tell players that they need to practice their skills to succeed in the sport. You do not need to be big and you do not even need to be quick (though it helps) but to be a good Lacrosse player you need the stick skills.
