Men's U19 win U19 League
7-4 win seals league title
The final game in the U19 league saw Timperley take on Poynton, with the winner of the game winning the league. A draw was no good to Timperley due to our inferior goal difference, so it was a case of win the game, win the league.
In wet and cold conditions, Timperley put in a performance to be proud of, controlled almost everything on the pitch and came out on top in a low scoring game by 7 goals to 4.
The first quarter ended 1-1, which was totally at odds with the three previously high scoring games we’d had, but we felt really comfortable with our game. The start of the second quarter saw Poynton score two quick goals, but even at 1-3 down, we did not panic; for the last five or six minutes of the half we upped the tempo, moved the ball well in attack and got two goals to be level at 3-3 at half time.
More of the same in the third quarter with Poynton scoreless and Timperley bagging two more, the second by pushing a full field transition in the final seconds to really hurt Poynton. 5-3 up and 15 minutes to go.
Everyone was pumped yet focussed on the job in hand by now, and we were really calm on the bench as the boys delivered exactly what was needed. We stretched the lead to three goals, before setting about killing the game. There were no scares in this period, with plenty of possession, and after one final man down situation, ended up with the ball in our sticks as the final whistle blew, with us winning the game 7-4.
For me this was a proper game of lacrosse, a tight low scoring game as opposed to a high scoring blowout. The team was excellent. At the back the defence was the best it has been all season, getting their match ups and slides spot on for the most part. The clearing was faultless. The midfield and attack dealt in long scoring possessions and when we turned the ball over the effort on the ride and groundball by the whole team was exemplary.
Well done boys. U19 league champions for the first time since 2012.
