October 2011 Review
October report.
Tints kicked off October with a 4-1 away win over The Westoe in the Alex Woodcock Cup. 2 goals from striker Matt Watson and a goal a piece for Gavin Teasdale and Phil Taylor on his final game for a few months saw Tints run out comfortable victors in the end against a good Westoe team. Daniel Cox and Liam Alexander had both left the side for 3 and 6 months respectively to pursue work and holiday commitments.
Boldon Fc were up next in the A Division League cup round 1. A re-run of the league game earlier in the season saw the sides level at 90 minutes only for Tints to power home 4 goals in extra time and run out comfortable winners in the end. Tints were without Phil Taylor so a new midfield trio was introduced and it offered its benefits and its negatives which saw the game level at 4-4 after 90 minutes. A Teasdale hat-trick, two goals from Gavin Matthews on his return and a goal from Matt Watson saw Tints strike force deliver the goods in this one along with a goal a piece for Martin and Stephen Rutter. Tints will play The Bridge in the quarter finals in November.
County Cup Preliminary round 3 against Port Clarence was a very cagey affair with both sides failing to produce any real clear cut chances. The game was decided with the last kick of the game from the right foot of Mark Young. A tremendous strike across the keeper and if off the far post from all of 25 yards saw Tints win it in normal time when they looked to be heading for their 5th draw of the season in normal time. Tints are now through to the last 64 of the County cup in their first season of entering.
Premier League leaders Brighams visited the Northern Area playing fields to play Tints in the Sanford and Goudie Cup. After an early mistake allowed Brighams to take a cheap early lead, Tints fought back and scored through Matt Watson to bring the game level. After a few promising chances for both teams, the Premier Divisions experience and possession told as they picked Tints off in the second half as the game finished 4-1 to Brighams.
A bad injury to Ross Topping in training the following Thursday would leave Tints struggling furher for recognised central midfield players for the rest of the month, a real blow to the side as Ross had been on fire in recent weeks as a driving force at the heart of the team. Striker Matt Watson would also go on to miss the next few games with other commitments.
The injury to Ross Topping and a recurring ankle injury to Martin Rutter left Tints with only 12 players to choose from for the important home game against Jarrow Civic in the League. After a few minutes of play, Tints were left with only eleven men, as Mark Young was withdrawn with a hamstring injury and Ross Allsopp who was the only available sub took his place leaving Tints to play 87 minutes with no subs. After taking an early lead through captain Stephen Rutter, Jarrow pegged them back just after half time with a deep cross finding an unmarked player to head home. The talking point of the game came in a crazy five minute spell where Tints managed to miss 3 penalties in that space of time. A handball gave Gavin Teasdale his first opportunity from the spot, the winger placed the ball at a comfortable height to the keepers right, only for Gavin Matthews to pick up the rebound and be wiped out in the process. Teasdale determined to make amends for his miss only seconds ago, respotted the ball and dragged his more powerful effort wide of the left hand post. A few minutes later, Tints continued to rally and were awarded their third penalty when Gavin Teasdale was wiped out inside the box after a mazy run. Set piece taker Kris Thompson was given the option to replicate his outstanding corner and free kick form from 12 yards, but his tame effort under major pressure from the earlier misses was similar to Teasdale’s first and held by the keeper. With no subs to come on and Tints deflated at the three missed penalties, it was Jarrow who should have took all three points home with them, but a combination of missed chances and some excellent goalkeeping from Connor Binney saw them unable to take full advantage and let Tints off with a point.
An indifferent month for Tints October turned out to be but definately a positive one overall compared with the start of the season. What started off with Tints in excellent form, slowly saw numbers depleat and as a result, performances to go with it. After next week’s County Cup game, Tints will have played 6 out of 7 matches at home and could probably do with a change of scenery as our home form has not been the best this season or at least compared to our away form. It is something that must be put right however if we are to finish the season strongly.
Still plenty to play for, some new faces are on the way to compensate for the quality lost during the last month or so and teams at the top of the league are starting to beat each other and lose to “lesser” sides in the division. Our League position hasn’t been helped by the fact that we have only played one league game in two months although we do need to start killing teams off and turning draws into wins as we have now drawn five fixtures this season which is very unusual for us; this is again reflected in our league goal difference of zero. It is going to be a very hard league to get out of this year but we can take heart that a run of wins will have us right in view of the leading pack going into the crunch last few months which is what we now need to knuckle down and do.
Only one loss in October and that was to the Premiership leaders and our great form in the cups has put us in an overall promising position for the remainder of the season. A few things need to be addressed in the next couple of weeks, numbers being a priority so we can start to build some healthy competition again. A county cup game to kick off November is followed by Anna McCarthy's Christening meaning we dont play another South Shields match until Sunday the 20th of November. This gives us a good few weeks to sort our numbers out, with a few new faces and the likes of Ross Topping and Matt Watson all back by then to see us through to the new year when we will be looking to really push on as we did last season.
