Tonyrefail 13 - Llanishen 29
League leaders Llanishen were the visitors to Tylcha Fawr for this Div 3 South East game and a bonus point win would ensure them the league title and promotion to Div. 2 next season. Ton suffered a heavy defeat when the sides met back last September and the supporters were apprehensive as to how things would go but to their credit the home side made life very difficult for the visitors who only secured the bonus point with the last play of the game.
The game began with Ton going straight on the offensive and they surprised the visitors with a try after two minutes when full back Geraint Shalton
found a gap in their defence. He made good ground before being hauled down short of the line but he managed to get the ball away and Rhys Morris
was able to touch down close to the posts. Matthew Cook
was on target with the boot and Ton had a 7 - 0 lead but this stung Llanishen into action. For the next twenty minutes they subjected Ton's defence to tremendous pressure, scoring three tries in the process, but although the home side were battered they were not yet beaten. They began to put some good phases of play together and exert some pressure themselves and by half time they had brought the score back to 13-19 thanks to the boot of Matthew Cook
In the second half Ton were playing down the slope and they began in a very positive manner taking play to the opposition at every opportunity. They were beginning to get the upper hand in the set scrums and they used that to good effect to keep the pressure on but they never had quite enough to get over the try line and they always had to be wary of Llanishen's counter attacking ability. With neither side able to totally gain the upper hand it looked like the second half would end with no further scores but with only three minutes remaining Llanishen were on target with a penalty goal and they went back upfield from the restart to retain possession through a number of phases to touch down out wide for the bonus point.
Although Llanishen were worthy winners Ton certainly made them work hard and probably had the better of things in the second half. Had they been able to convert pressure into points then the score would have been much closer.
Tonyrefail Seconds enjoyed an eight try romp in beating Tylorstown Seconds by 48-14 with Chris Rand
scoring three whilst Tonyrefail U13's and Under14's had resounding forty point wins over Irish touring side Presidents College Bray.
