Towcestrians RFC Development XV 33pts vs Bedford Athletic 2nd XV 17pts

What started off to be more than a point a minute ended as a hard fought win for Towcester.
As can be the way with this development side when we start scoring tries with such ease we start playing very individual rugby that leads to numerous opportunities going astray.
Bedford short on numbers couldn’t field a front row so the game started with uncontested scrums.
The first score came from the first scrum, Chris Johnson picked up from the base of the scrum brushed aside the flanker offloading the ball to Rob Bodily. Rob popped the ball to Jamie Cartwright who off loaded to Matt Huck running a straight line back against play to score under the posts. The try was converted by Rob Bodily the first of 3 on the day.
3 minutes later Richard Carter Playing at No15 got into the perfect position to be on the receiving end of a pass from Gus Hopewell again scoring under the posts.
The last score of the half for Towcester came literally after another 3 minutes, a loose pass from Bedford and a good chase from Tows gave Jamie Cartwright space enough to jink his way pasted a couple of missed tackles to score.
This is when it started getting tough, too many attacks became individual attempts to get on the score sheet which lead to fumbles, a knock on or lack of support from the following players.
Bedford did peg back 2 scores and the half ended 21points to 12.
Towcester did start the second half under pressure from Bedford who with their tails up from the first half with them in the ascendancy put lots of pressure on Towcester’s defensive line.
They did score the next points but it was that man Richard Carter who got to the ball first after a chip from Matt Huck turned the defence to score to the right of the posts.
Towcester’s clearing out at the break down and first up tackles started to improve as the players stared to play as a team again.
Newbie Tom Doran playing his first game for Towcester showed his pace as he chased well harrying the opposition leading to his first try for the club which he duly converted.
Numerous other attacks ended with no more tries as that final pass or final decision went astray, but a win is a win.
Next week we are away at Olney for another rematch.
