Result: Towcestrians RFC 19 - Old Northamptonians 38

Excellent and very competitive game of Rugby.

After a mixed 2018 with both game time and training impacted by the weather and state of the pitches this was a great opportunity to continue to get back in the swing. Thanks also to ON's for hosting us with a later kick off as we couldn't play at Tows today due to pitches.

The 1st half was a full blooded affair with lots of physical confrontation in the forwards around the breakdown and fringes. Both packs went at it as you would expect and it was a fairly even affair upfront with both packs winning some ball off each other and making some big hits.

ON's came in at the end of the 1st half 21-12 ahead. This was after two well taken tries from Dan and Isaac and Tows maybe slightly unlucky as one lunge over the line from Dan was deemed a knock on by the ref to disallow a 3rd try for us .

Overall the 1st half was much closer in terms of possession and territory and more of an even affair then the the score line intimated.

The 2nd half was more mixed for Tows as while we continued to compete well and played some good rugby in patches we started to get on the wrong end of a few penalties for infringing the offside line which started to give ON's territory advantage. Additionally with a yellow card for one of the lads (again for offside) we switched off a little for 10 minutes and allowed ON's a little too much respect which they took advantage of very well to extend the score to 38-12.

A few tactical changes were made and we also came back to have all 15 lads on the pitch which saw Tows start to have some better territory in the last 10 mins of the 2nd half capped by an aggressive try from Isaac and conversion from Dan closing the score.

Better attacking play and passing from Tows started to put ON's under pressure but we couldn't be clinical enough to close the score. Really unlucky too for one of our new lads Mason, who went so close to dotting the ball over after a scything run out on the wing but was brought down a couple of yards from the line.

So the end score was 38-19. Lots of positives from the lads today and some big performances and this was much more of what we are about. While we were on the wrong end of the score it was pleasing to see our physicality, aggression and commitment against our 1st division opponents.

Score: Tows 19 - ONs 38

Tries: Isaac (2), Dan

Conversions: Dan (2)
