Rick Keam.
Rick played for M.V. in the late 60’s early 70’s until his marriage, when he re-located to Blackpool and played for them for a further few years. In Manchester he was a resident for some 4 years at the renowned 627 Wilbraham Road which was an M.V. stronghold for many years housing such luminaries as Conrad Guelke (whose overcoat I inherited – shame he was 6ft 4in), Geoff Donaldson, Billy Rhodes, Cliff Smith, Barry Reid and yours truly. It was an establishment renowned for its untidiness and social life.
Rick played some 1st XV rugby but will be principally remembered for his 2nd XV exploits and his captaincy of said team. He played mostly at centre with occasional sorties at fly-half despite always assuring us he would have made a fine hooker. He was, in fact, one of the best passers of the ball ever seen at MV and to play wing outside him was a treat as such worthies as Newham, Rhodes, Crookes etc. would proclaim.
At Blackpool he was the longtime friend of Mike Dickinson, the first team captain and second row (who, in time, rose to be President of the club). Eventually he left the area and wound up in the Orkneys of all places – don’t ask.
He returned to the NorthWest and was resident in Bolton for many years so was able to join in the ‘festivities’ associated with the ‘Old Farts’ and was a regular attender at those inimitable functions. The boy will be sorely missed.
