Trentham Just edge Bowden in evenly matched game
Trentham travelled to Bowdon on a pleasant Sunday afternoon. As usual the warm up did not go as the coaches would have liked and this showed as Trentham went 5 points down in the first 5 minutes of the game as poor tackling saw the big Bowdon second row romp in for a try.
Trentham pulled a penalty back on the 10th minute through George Sketcher. The hosts were next on the score board when sloppy tackling again saw them crash through the middle of the forwards to claim there second unconverted try.
This seemed to finally wake the visitors up and they started to put together some good phases of rugby. Strong rucking saw the boys in green recycle quick ball for Dan Raftery to make a break and slip the ball out of the tackle to Tristian De Jager coming on a hard line who raced in under the posts. George Sketcher added the conversion. Half Time Bowdon 10 Trentham 10.
The second half brought a few changes which seemed to steady the ship with neither side making much headway for the first 15 minutes.
Trentham worked their way down the pitch and forced a knock on to give them a scrum 10m out. The visitors secured the ball in the scrum and the 8 picked up and fed scrum half Joel Bezus down the blind side. He dummied the winger and crashed over in the corner for a well worked try. The conversion drifted just wide.
There then followed a period of poor discipline which saw the referee reach in his pocket several times handing out yellow cards to both teams. At one point the visitors went down to 13 men and produced some stirling defence to prevent the home side taking advantage.
The discipline continued to play a part as Trentham took advantage following the opposition's backchat to kick for goal. Joel Bezus Landed the penalty to extend Trentham's lead beyond one score.
This proved decisive as in the closing 5 minutes Bowdon turned it on and secured a converted try through probably their best passage of play of the game.
In the dying minutes through some clever kicking and keep ball, Trentham pinned the opposition in their own half finally kicking the ball off the park as the clock went red. Final Score Bowdon 17 Trentham 18
