Vets hit for six after producing a first half nightmare
Ex premier league ref takes charge of the Vets!!!
Rutherford FC 6 Trimdon Vets 1
21st April 2012
Kick off 10:30
Referee: Kenneth Redfern
The long trip north is increased today as we are informed earlier in the week that Rutherford’s resident pitch has ducks on it as a result of this week’s torrential rain.
As a result of this we travel even further north up the A69 to Heddon on the wall to Close House Hotel, on arriving it’s still a further two mile in the hotel grounds to find the pitch, however when we actually got on the pitch it was worth the travel as it was displaying a full cover of grass, taking a stud and no water standing.
Again we only have a total of 15 players who turn up today missing today from our depleted squad are the injured Philip Barber Ball, Gary Hodgson, Shaun McElvaney and Barry Conkerton.
The three unlucky ones today are the gaffer John King, Freddy Wilkinson and Nigel Wilson who all don the subs coats. Johns picked a team to try and contain Rutherford who have won their last 14 league games and as a result are flying up the league table
Kick off
Nigel wins the toss and we chose to turn around and let Rutherford take the kick off. The game today is officiated by Ken Redfern, for those who don’t know Ken he is an ex-Premier league referee who took control of 26 games during the 92/93 season and issued an average of 0.69 cards per game that season, let’s hope he still runs the game in the same way.
Its Northumberland FA rules so the linesmen also have to flag for offside, not the best idea in my opinion as some are fairer than others as we saw today.
The game gets underway and from the very first whistle the Vets are struggling as Rutherford attacks with ease every time they have possession, they are a well organised team who work just as hard without the ball as they do with it.
The games only ten minutes in and we have survived three scares already and are cruelly punished for the fourth as Rutherford attack Stuart Timmiss and Ian Bunter are out quickly to smother yet another Rutherford attack. Stuart is down quickly and smothers the ball at the feet or Rutherford’s centre forward, who in turn Drogba style throws himself to the floor and Mr Redfern awards a penalty.
Much protesting by the Vets follows, obviously to no avail as the ref isn’t going to give it; surprisingly the linesman didn’t flag for it as he flagged for everything else today.
The penalty is despatched with ease as we go one nil behind and looking at our play so far have provided more than a mountain for us to climb to get back into the game.
Instead of getting back on with the game we have lost our heads as we are still mulling over the poor penalty decision as we see goals two, three, four and five appear.
Our first decent play of passing football sees us gain something as good interchanging of passes between Nigel Austick, Ian Wilkinson and Julian Austick sees Julian waltz through Rutherfords defence and beat the keeper with ease as we get a goal back. GOAL 5 – 1.
Rutherford looks shell shocked as they have conceded a goal to such poor quality opposition as the Vets. The game is played out till half time.
Half Time
John King delivers the half time team talk and everyone gets a good bollocking as we have all let ourselves down this half.
Substitutions are made, off come Ian Bunter, Paul Darby, Alan Cairns and Colin Wharton and are replaced by John King, Freddy Wilkinson, Russ Phillpott and Nigel Wilson. Big Russ making his first appearance in months as he has just returned from fighting for our country and keeping us safe – let’s hope he can instil some fight on the pitch also.
Second half
The game gets underway and from the off we are on the attack which surprises me as we are expecting to be on the back foot for the entire second half.
The game has totally changed round as the Vets must end up with about 75% of the play and possession for the entire second half as we look much the better team this half, continually pushing Rutherford back, creating chances and a dozen corners to boot.
We are only prevented by some excellent goalkeeping by Rutherford’s keeper who pulled off some fine saves that would have earned him my man of the match vote. I didn’t go back for a drink so unsure who we actually gave it to.
It’s either a combination of the subs and changes we have made or Rutherford have though the game was over but we are actually the better team, any attack Rutherford produce is dealt with ease by Russ Phillpott and man of the match Stephen Mason who were an awesome centre back pairing in the second half.
A rare Rutherford attack comes to nothing as we let the ball run out for a goal kick, our day gets worse and with no one around him keeper Stuart Timmiss goes to ground with a back injury. Yes you have guessed it we have no spare keeper today so Stu’s off and Alan Cairns has the unenviable task of going in goal.
We have attack after attack that we fail to capitalise upon, Rutherford threaten once and score from 25 yards as Alan Cairns is easily chipped, can’t criticise Alan as he has covered well in goal.
We huff and puff for the latter of the half and fail to reduce the deficit as the ref brings the game to a close.
In summary we didn’t disgrace ourselves in the second half and regained a bit of pride after the first half howler we produced, sometimes you just have to be honest and admit we were beaten off a much better side than us today, much younger and fitter.
I can’t see us playing Rutherford again next season as I believe they will get one of the promotion spots along with BT [no idea how] and Yarm St Marys who in my opinion are by far the best team in the league.
Our thoughts now turn to our final very hard three games of the season against Houghton, Deneside and Rutherford again where we may not gain another point, but you ever know if we can produce displays like we have done in the second half today.
Full Time
Final Score – Rutherford AFC 6 Trimdon Vets 1
Trimdon Man of the match chosen by opposition – Stephen Mason
Goof of the day award goes to – not awarded – could have been anyone in the first half!
Next game - We are at AWAY to Houghton Cricket Club on the 28th of April 2012, this will be our second trip there this season as we have already had an 11 goal thriller in the cup where we lost out to the odd goal.
Those who are not going straight there we will be meeting and leaving BOWBURN services and travel to the game as one. I will post and email directions also.
If you are available and were not there today contact John as soon as you can, remember THURSDAY is the cut off day so we are not messing our fringe players about telling them they are not needed and then telling them they are then required due to people dropping out late on a Friday night/Saturday morning.
Cheers
Colin
