Marsden Inn 3 Trimdon Vets 6
22nd October 2011
Kick off 10:30
Referee: James Marshall
Today we face South Shields Marsden Inn a team who like us got promoted last season via the back door as they also didn’t finish in the top three. We have played them for a few seasons now and it’s always an evenly contested game.
Last year saw us win by the odd goal in 5 at Marsden’s place and us thrashing them 5-0 on the final day of the season, the game that saw us get promoted for the first time in Vets history.
We have a poor turn out again today as we only have 12. Missing are injured John King, Stu Timmiss, Gary Hodgson, Ian Wilkinson [car crash], Keith Cooper, Nigel Wilson, Russ Phillpott, Darran Kearsley, Tommy Pickles, and Barry Fearon.
John informs us in the changing room that Mark “Douggy” Douglass has left us for pastures new, as he has decided to sign for Boldon Colliery Tavern. To be fair it’s on his doorstep so you cannot really blame him – thanks for all your support over the years Mark and good luck for the future.
In that strange twist of fate the football throws up we will meet up with Douggy on the 3rd of December as we host Boldon in the Kenny Ball cup.
John picks the team and the unlucky one is the returning Barry Conkerton via nightshift.
Kick off
We line up in our recently implemented 4-5-1 formation with the view that it has worked well the last couple of games. Nigel loses the toss and we end up kicking up the hill into the blazing sun, no doubt it will play its part today.
The game gets underway and in the opening exchanges there is nothing between the teams, both teams are trying to keep the ball down and move it quickly across the park.
Plenty of chances for both sides come and go Nigel has the beating of their midfield and is continually opening them up, better final ball would have seen goals for Del and Colin.
Same at the other end as Marsden create a few chances but their final ball is woeful with Gary not tested in goal as he spectates as most of the shots go well wide.
First piece of true quality reaps rewards as Paul Darby slips the ball forward for Julian who turns his marker inside out takes a touch and fires in a precision dipping shot from 20 yards out that rockets into the back of the net, just under the bar past a motionless keeper. GOAL 0-1. To be fair on their keeper who had a good game today he had no chance.
Restart taken and we are snapping at the heels of Marsden on every occasion as we push for a second. More half chances come our way but we fail to produce that final bit of quality that would put us two up.
Marsden are moving the ball forward quickly now as its along ball as quick as they can, one speculative one catches us out as Freddy goes to clear the ball facing the sun he misses the ball completely as it bounces past him, Marsdens forward takes a touch and delivers a precision shot that has Gary beaten all ends up. GOAL 1-1.
Restart taken and I cannot help but think here we go again as yet gain we have conceded a very sloppy goal when we were in the ascendancy. Our heads don’t drop as we are quickly back into our stride Nigels at it again with a one on one with the keeper he must score! But doesn’t as he waits too long as the keepers off his line quickly to block with his body.
Trimdon are on the attack again, a good interchange between Julian and Nigel sees Nigel breaking through, he just has to pull the ball back and Colins got a tap in, he tries to go round the keeper and Marsden gratefully lift the ball high up field to safety.
Just as I am thinking we are going to rue these missed chances we put one away, again Nigels through as he pulls the keeper off his line again and to the by-line, this time Nigel pulls it back into the box and Dels there to make no mistake from close range. GOAL 1-2.
Half time looms and we make sure we don’t concede again as we keep the ball for the remainder of the half as the ref blows for half time.
Half Time
Substitution made as Paul Darby comes off and Ian comes on in a straight switch.
Spectating John tells us to keep up the hard work, closing down and keep the ball moving and more goals will come our way, again he was right – that’s why he is the gaffer!
Second half
Off we go again as we go down the hill and its Marsden’s turn to face the sunshine, let’s hope they struggle in the same way we did the first half.
Nigel and Julian are winning the midfield battle and we soon come out on top again as a good interchange of passes between them, sees the ball fed to Paul Darby who slips in Del who is on the move and fires right into the opposition’s net, cracking goal. GOAL 1-3
Restart taken and Pauls off to rest his injury and on comes Ian Bunter in a straight swap at right back. Not sure if we are resting on our two goal cushion or its the substitutions that Marsden have made but Marsden are edging the game now, fortunately as in the first half their forwards don’t seem to have their shooting boots on as Garys not really troubled so far this half.
Looks like I have spoken too soon as another attack sees Marsden pull one back, some poor marking presents their forward with time to compose himself and fire across Gary into the roof of the net giving him no chance of saving it. GOAL 2-3.
We take the restart and again we are squandering our lead, for once we don’t give in, if anything their goal appears to galvanise us as a team as we go up a gear as we pass the ball well and attack in numbers, only a couple of very tight offside decisions thwart Del from increasing his tally.
Soon after Nigel and Julian waltz through the midfield, under pressure Marsden’s right back fails to get a good tackle in and Nigels clean through, this time he makes no mistake as he tucks the ball right into the bottom corner of the net, again their keeper has had no chance of saving it. GOAL 2-4. Again we obtain a two goal cushion.
Restart taken and Marsden shuffle the pack again, looks like they going three up front in an attempt to get something out of the game.
It’s all in vain as an attack from Marsden results in a poor shot that Gary collects with ease, he launches long out of his hands down the hill, one bounce and Dels on it, he outmuscles their centre half and scores another cracker GOAL 2-5.
Clocks running down now, even the Vets couldn’t blow this lead or could we? Marsden have everybody forward with every attack, balls into our crowded box total indecision sees Gary with the choice of diving at swinging feel or trying to kick clear, he tries the latter and doesn’t get enough contact on it as a Marsden boot pokes it into an unguarded net. GOAL 3-5.
Restart taken, minutes remain all we need to do is keep the ball. Pauls back on for Colin and his final contribution is a through ball for dell to run onto. Del is on fire today as he fires across the keeper into the back of the net for his fourth of the match. GOAL 3-6
Soon after the restart the final whistle arrives. We leave the pitch after a game where we have put in a good shift and for once took our chances and not been blighted by some poor refereeing decisions. No complaints about the ref today very even and very fair.
