What A Weekend At Butlins!!!
Bank Holiday Weekend saw the U15 Girls squad travel to Butlins In Bognor Regis for the end of season Tour, and what an eventful weekend it was.
Above all the one thing that shone through was that this squad of girls are the bravest bunch of 14 & 15 year old girls I know. Despite some horrible setbacks and injuries they battled through the pain to complete the tournament and emerge the other side with every other team showing nothing but admiration for our girls.
To say I and the parents were proud of the effort does not even come close and I sincerely hope they realise what an great effort it was.
The weekend started on Saturday afternoon with two teams in the tournament and first up for the Reds was Tower Hill from Oxford. it was a magnificent start to the game as Trowbridge totally overpowered their opponents and were 1-0 within the first minute. Then from nowhere injury number 1 stuck. Just 90 seconds into the tour Lauren Cartledge went down after a challenge and was forced to come off. It was clear from the pain that she was in her tournament was over and the injury left her hobbling on crutches for the rest of the weekend. It has been diagnosed as a severely sprained foot, damaged ligaments and a bruised bone. The game was won 3-0 comfortably but the drama didn't end there. Leah Beaven was also hurt in a robust challenge near the end as she took a heavy blow to the ankle - more on that later.
Next for the reds was a match against their team mates, the Yellow team which passed without incident and ended with a 4-0 victory to the Reds.
Third and final game of day one was against Kingswood of Surrey. These girls had won the previous year and runners up the year before that. The game was a really good game and very even throughout. Lucy pulled off two worldies in goal but unfortunately near the end the opposition scrambled in what was to be the winner. Leah Beaven took another crunching tackle to the ankle and was forced to leave the pitch in agony. Even more on that later.
Day two started with a game against Senrab FC - a big physical (but fair) side from East London. This game was the definition of Daylight Robbery. The reds created 7/8 good chances but failed to convert, had 80 percent of the ball but were caught with a sucker punch in the last minute when a shot from distance squirmed into the corner. A patched up Leah came on on in the second half but for a third time was clattered on her ankle and was forced out of the tournament. She too left West Sussex on crutches and was later diagnosed with a sprained ankle, bruised bone and badly damaged ligaments. not pleasant. That left the reds down to a bare 7 but Ruby was only at half pace due to an injury already being carried.
Next up was Hungate which passed without further injury and resulted in a 1-0 victory. Followed by a 0-0 draw with Colne Valley N. The penultimate game was a comfortable 2-0 victory against Gravesham girls leaving the girls needing a victory to finish runners up.
The final game was against Colne Valley S and was a very tired end of tournament scrappy game and Colne Valeey dominated the first half and we were lucky to be level at half time. An improved second half display saw our girls take the lead when Megan Fear bravely slide in with the advancing kepper and poked the ball under her. Heartbreak struck in the final minute when Valley scored the scrappiest of scrappy goals. The remaining seven Red players had put everything into their tournament and finished a creditable 3rd.
The Yellows had an equally eventful time As they started the tournament with one sub and Beth Barby kindly volunteering to keep goal. Their first game ended in a 5-1 defeat to Colne Valley end and to be fair it was nothing more than they deserved after a very lacklustre performance. Immediately after the game they lost their coach as Simon traveled to Hospital with Lauren after her injury in the Reds first game. Chris Lambert took over coaching duties assisted by Mike were possible. A shell shocked team played really well in their second game against the Reds but were not able to find the net.
Third up was the daunting prospect of facing Senrab FC and boy did the girls step up. Within the first minute Beth was struggling with a knee injury and Tianna was playing in midfield an unfamiliar position. Holly Wheeler was marking a girl fully a foot taller and considerably bigger. The 7 girls on the pitch were magnificent, breathtaking in fact. the effort and commitment from them was unbelievable and although nobody could doubt that Senrab were technically a better team our girls embarrassed them with their heart and commitment. Even at 2-0 down they battled for every ball and when Maddie pulled a goal back there was the loudest cheer of the day. The girls came off the pitch with Chloe with a pulled quad and sore ankle, Beth Ives two really sore legs.
Day two for the Yellows started in disastrous fashion for them. A match against Colne Valley S when Beth Barby went down and became the second player from the squad to visit hospital, this time in an ambulance and her tournament was over. The injury was diagnosed as a severely sprained ankle and major damage to the knee she recently had operated on and Beth was left as another player hobbling on crutches.
Based on the fact that Chloe was struggling to walk she was volunteered to keep goal and after a long discussion the girls decided to carry on and play the rest of the event with no subs.
The next game was against Kingswood who were already unbeaten and looking good for the win but a brave performance saw the girls go down to a 4-0 defeat but another fabulous effort. Tianna was now struggling with her ankle and Chloe was well frankly struggling to stand.
The Yellows sixth game was against Gravesham and a great effort and a third goal for Maddie saw them go down narrowly 2-1 and Tower Hill beat them 2-0 in the seventh when Beth Ives' legs finally gave up and she ended up being piggy backed off the pitch.
The girls were again given the option to pull out of their last game but to their credit they all agreed to play the last game with 6 players. That was until a brave Beth Ives refused to let them down and played for them as best she could.
As I started this round up with, the girls looked like they had been to war, but they had stuck by eachother and showed what fantastic characters they are. Not downhearted at all by the events they headed off to the presentation evening full of spirt and were all delighted to meet Faye White the England Womens Captain, I think they were gutted to find out the MARK WRIGHT was he of Southampton, Liverpool and England - NOT MARK WRIGHT from T.O.W.I.E. The girls were presented with their tour memento's and the weekend was rounded off by the Yellow team being awarded the fair play award, something they fully deserved. The Icing on the cake was when the under 15 girls golden ball (awarded for the best piece of play in the tournament) was given to Emily Martin of the Reds for a fantastic goal line clearance in the game against SENRAB.
So we headed home on Monday licking some serious and not so serious wounds but the memories were great. It was a fabulous weekend where the girls behaved exemplary and thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the parents let their hair down a bit and enjoyed eachothers company. Well done to ALL THE GIRLS who played for themselves, their friends and their club you really did do us proud.
All of us would like to wish Lauren Beth and Leah in particular, but also all the other girls carrying knocks a speedy recovery, look after yourselves.
