WEstern Counties West - Truro v North Petherton on 10 September
This was a disappointmenr for Truro in their first home league game of the season.
Western Counties West - Truro 18 - North Petherton 22
North Petherton were a tenacious side who stuck to it, and did not give up for the full 80 minutes, but Truro were denied their second win of the season in the 81st minute, after taking the lead with five minutes to go. Neither side dominated, although Pethy defended very well in the first half when the home side had the wind behind them and when Truro were camped in the visitor's half for long periods.
The game stayed without a score for the first quarter, then fly half Jake Champion put Truro ahead with a penalty goal, but five minutes later, the visitors took the lead from a break away, when No 8 Matt Brown crossed for full back Harry Roberts to convert. Almost on half time, and very much against the run of play, they went further ahead with a try by wing Jamie Adams, again converted by Roberts, giving North Petherton a 11 point lead. Truro had had most of the possession in those first 40 minutes, but unfortunate mistakes led to the tries scored against them.
Right after the start of the second half Rob Ley made a break that led to a try by Mark Lea, converted by Champion, and Truro were back in the game. Then after 55 minutes they were awarded a penalty goal which Champion concerted in to a strong wind, reducing the lead to one point.
This second half had become a little scrappy and there were yellow cards for each side, one of which resulted in a further penalty goal for the Somerset side, but with five minutes to go, persistent home pressure resulted in an excellent try by Luke Hopper, after good play from both forwards and backs, giving them a one point lead. Truro were very much on top at this stage, but then, in injury time and as so often happens in rugby, centre North Petherton’s Gavin Hancock broke through, ran 40 yards and scored in the corner. The game was over and the visitors won at St Clements in injury time for the second year running.
This was a disappointment for Truro in their opening home game of the season, and there is room for improvement in the near future. After penning the visitors in their own half for most of the first half Truro handed the visitors success with silly mistakes. Coach Chris Lea said after the game that the home side played all the rugby but made three mistakes which led to North Petherton tries. We dominated territory and possession he said, but in the end those three tries gave the scoreboard a cruel and unbalanced look at the end. Truro just have to take it on the chin and build towards the next league game at Wellington; they did everything but win. The consolation for Truro was a losing bonus point.
