Under 12's away at Oldham

2 very evenly matched teams...

We travelled to Oldham with only 11 players available and new it would be a hard task on a heavy sandy pitch with no subs. We started the game very poorly as questionable tackling allowed Oldham to gain a two try lead within first 5 minutes. We then got one back and hoped to have turned a corner but from the kick off the Oldham catcher returned the full length untouched for a try. We knew we was in a game then as Oldham looked up for it and where competing at every aspect. We started to use quick ball from the ruck as knowing that the far larger Oldham pack would dominate us if we got into an arm wrestle with them. We then hit 4 tries by using good hands and fast distribution outwide to take us into a 25-15 lead at half time.
We knew that Oldham would use the subs and with fresh legs would come hard at us again. The second half was less free flowing with both sides giving away penalties for high tackles, off sides and entering from the side of the ruck. This made the game more stop start and became a case of you score we score. Oldhams success came with great kicks over our defence and an aggressive chase which often left us with 2 v 4 at the back as tiredness seemed to limit our players to get back to support. With 5 minutes left Oldham took the lead 40-35 and we could easily have crumbled but credit to the lads we came back fighting. We went through phase after phase gaining inch by inch to get closer to the line before working an overlap on the right 10 metres out. We got the ball out wide and went over for the score making it all level with 30 seconds left. Oldham received the ball and through determination a great work rate we forced Oldham to knock on giving us 1 last opportunity to score. After several phases of going nowhere in the middle we made a dart for the right wing, it looked as though we was going to score but a great last ditch tackle from the Oldham full back meant he tackled Reece and the ball into touch, bringing the final whistle to a well deserved draw for both teams.

Our man of the match was Reece with great full back play from an attacking and defensive point of view. Was our leader on the pitch today!

Thanks to Oldham for their hospitality, we will see you twice in next 2 Sundays at different events, good luck lads.
