Chris Wearmouth scores in the final play to secure the victory for Tyne.

As Park ran onto the pitch to start the game I was impressed with their size and expected a tough one up front. Throughout the 1st half, except for a brief excursion into Park territory to give us a converted try by Rob Parker on 4 minutes, the play was deep into our half, Park's big forwards trying to drive over the line. In totally committed defence we conceded a number of penalties which, against loud advice from their supporters in the stand, Park chose to kick for touch. Time after time at positions close to our line Park won possession from lineouts but could not penetrate our defence until the 36th minute when we were down to 14 after Jonny Cousin's yellow. 5-7 at half time.
Two minutes into the 2nd half Park conceded a penalty just inside their 22 and bang in front - a gift for Rob to restore our lead 8-7. It didn't last long, Park's winger touching down in the corner for an unconverted try six minutes later. This half was much more even and open. Our lineout was working well and, although Park's big forwards were giving us a hard time in scrums, we repeated last season's skill in recovering the ball from retreating scrums. In the last quarter it seemed that Park's big lads were tiring, several going down for a short break. They were caught napping by a quick tap and go from a penalty, a couple of quick passes and a converted try for Joe Mills. Park came back almost immediately with a drive by three or four forwards after which the touch judge advised the ref that the ball had been properly grounded just on the line out wide. Play had continued with Park giving a short pass to a player who clearly dropped the ball before attempting to ground it, but the try had already been scored. A fine conversion kick gave the lead back to Park 15-19 with 10 minutes to go. Tyne responded by maintaining their determined and disciplined attack, the backs always threatening and creating attacking situations. It was from such a situation that our forwards eventually drove over for a converted try by Chris Wearmouth on 78 minutes. Conversion and whistle: a great win over a club who were 3rd on the league.
For those in the stand it was an edge-of-the-seat experience, the lead changing with every score. But it was also an immensely impressive performance by Tynedale. Again our relatively light, young team that included teenagers, outlasting and outplaying a heavier more experienced team.

Next week at Otley, kick-off 2:30 p.m.

Yesterday Otley had a 17-31 5-pointer win away at Sheffield Tigers moving them up from 12th to 9th. An away 5-pointer would take us out of the drop zone, so a lot to play for. Otley are our nearest opponents so do come and support our team at this very friendly club - nice pies too!
