When it comes to the ways of getting around, cycling is still the best kept secret. Once you’ve experienced the joy of hopping on two wheels and being at your destination within minutes and with a smile, you’ll wonder why you pick up those car keys every morning. As bike lovers ourselves, we’ve decided to let you all in on this secret by sharing our bright green bikes with you.

We’re not claiming to have invented the concept of bike sharing, far from it in fact. We’ve spent time having a good look at what’s going on across Europe and concluded that whilst the schemes are brilliantly engineered, the infrastructure and technology required makes them infeasibly expensive.

ScratchBikes is a Newcastle University born venture which started life as a scheme just for students. It proved so successful that in July 2011, we decided it was time to shift up a gear or two by expanding the service to the whole of Newcastle and opening it up to everyone – all this made possible with support from Newcastle NE1 Limited.
