Tytherington Rocks entertained 5th place Purton on
Saturday in their Hellenic League Div 1 West fixture at the Hardwicke Field.
Determined to avenge a 2:1 defeat in August, Rocks had to settle for a 2:2 draw, scoring first and last in a competitive but "card free"
encounter in the bright Autumn sunshine.
Within 2 minutes of the kick-off Tytherington's Jim Brock forced a
diving save from Purton's keeper Cowley, whilst at the other end,
Purton's first corner saw a clean unchallenged header graze the crossbar.
George Williams opened the scoring for the home team on 20 minutes. Crossing the penalty area from right to left his low drive found the left hand corner of the Purton goal.
The game settled down in the second quarter.Purton's aerial attacks were dealt with confidently by Rocks debut keeper Jamie Curtis. Tytherington used the width of the pitch to great effect but both defences dominated play, including a Rob Cave clearing lunge after the ball rebounded from keeper Curtis.
With the air temperature dropping, the cloudless sky disguised the
murkiness which necessitated floodlights on 33 minutes.
Purton had the opportunity to level the score several times before half time with one particular goal-bound chance blocked by a determined Rocks defence. The home team defended their advantage with confidence until the interval.
Nevertheless it only took Purton 10 minutes to equalize, when following a free-kick, Nick McCrea powered a header past the Rocks keeper. Safian Skupinski replaced George Williams on 58 min and his immediate presence caused a defensive header, intended for the keeper, wide of the visitors own goal.
The resulting corner curled onto the Purton goal-line, but this proved to be the closest either side came to changing the score, with both teams failing to penetrate each other's defence.
Keeper Curtis was called into action again on 70 min when he tipped a shot onto the crossbar and the rebound was gratefully cleared.A high, wide shot by Rocks Dan Marshall was the only reward for the team's efforts during the third quarter of the game, as wayward passes began to give the advantage to the visitors.
The hardworking Rob Cave was replaced by John Timlin as the game drifted into the last 10 minutes. Purton had unfinished business, and another set-piece, this time a direct free kick from Jamie Richards gave the visitors a precious 2:1 lead.
Rocks made their final substitution when David Jones was replaced by player/manager Justin Pritchard but with their slender advantage, Purton appeared to be heading for 3 points.
However,as the final minute approached, Joe Walters conjured up a magic equalizer with a low drive into the bottom right hand corner of the visitor's net, to the relief of the home players and spectators.
The 2:2 draw, a fair result over the whole 90 minutes, concludes
