Clanfield 1 - 1 Tytherington Rocks

Tytherington Rocks bagged a priceless point with a late strike at Radcot Road.

Tytherington Rocks bagged a priceless point with a late strike at Radcot Road, which kept them in second place of the Hellenic League ( Div 1 ) West table.

Fighting back after Clanfield somehow got a surprise goal in the 36th minute, the Rocks leveller really was a freak. But their energetic second half pressure, after an half-time lecture by boss Gary Powell, deserved at least a point, if not more, in their first draw of the season, after their shocking performance in the opening period where it looked as if the team had never played together.

Jack Smyth just missed a first minute shot and later he headed against the Clanfield bar but the Rocks were playing some awful football and with nine minutes before half time the home side went ahead with a surprise goal. Dan Bishop, on the left touchline came inside and his low cross past everyone in the goalmouth to glance in at the far post. The Rocks had chances in the second half as Justin Bishop twice, Marc Hughes and sub Alex Chapman wasted good opportunities to get on the score sheet.

Towards the end of the game, as Tytherington were now in ascendancy, some of their supporters were wishing for any sort of goal to go in the Clanfield net, and with four minutes left, their prayers were answered!

Tytherington 'man of the match' Tim Baker, the former Yate Town defender, picked up a tackle in the centre –circle, advanced, and drove a 30 yard shot towards the home goal. The ball bounced in front of Clanfield goalkeeper, Chris Brain, thought to be one of the best shot stoppers in the League, but his reputation was tarnished as he had ‘butter fingers’ when the ball went over his shoulder and bounced over his hands into the goal!

Baker celebrated his strike in front of the Tytherington supporters with his delighted team mates and at the final whistle the Rocks’ scorer said: “ We knew that a goal was coming but we didn’t have a lot of time left and when I picked up the ball I went forward and I had time and space to shoot . It was great to see my effort go in. It is hard to get anything at Clanfield but, in the second half we tried to put pressure on them and at the end we were pleased to get a point out of a difficult game”.

Next Saturday ( Oct 15th ) the Rocks are away at Winterbourne United k.o.3 p.m.
