Three weeks into the new season and the under 13’s were full of energy and eager to get their season started.
Visitors Siddal started strong with the slope in their favour but it was Clifford for Underbank who in a determined mood, looked impressive as he brought the ball upfield, skirted round the edge of the defence and went in for the first try. Conversion by Brook (6-0).
Pestell showing maturity and immense power as he burst through the line, could have scored in the top left hand corner but improved the kicking chances for his half back as he improve his try and dived under the sticks.12-0. Siddal, always a quality side who won at their last meeting at The Cross by 48 -10 continued to offload the ball at every opportunity and were rewarded with a try at the opposite end.(12- 4) Another try within a minute and 12 -8, the fightback was back on.
Half time over and the many spectators were to be thrilled with an exciting game full of passion and magic as Hirst, Atkinson (top tackler award) and Dearnley (most improved award) tackled anything that moved. Whilst White today was always in the right place at the right time, as Siddal lost the ball he swooped on it and gave his side possession.
Man of the match Pestell put the home side further in front, as he ran through the defence with a mismatch of height and weight advantage, the spoils could only go one way. Siddal were unlucky not to score but their only threat and the nearest they got to the whitewash was when they were held up over the line. But they had nothing to lose and they kept on fighting.
However Heppenstall and Peel helping Jackson and Walker add meat to the bones of what is now looking and feeling like a quality side after a summer of bonding as victory was theirs as winger Hirst finished off the match for his first try. Keeping a clean sheet in the second half, Bank’s coaching staff were extremely pleased with this performance and it looks like the game next week away at West Bowling will be full of fireworks.
