United Services continue their league form with another impressive performance against Alresford RFC. USP wasted no time in getting on the score sheet with their first attack. Some great phase play by the forwards allowed time and space for Arthur Robinson (playing at 13) to cut a lovely line through the middle of the Alresford defence and outpace the covering fullback to dot down for USP inside the opening 4 minutes.
It wasn't long until what would be a familiar sight most of the afternoon occurred again with the forwards setting a plate form to unleash the backs and allow Sam Master to round the last defender. Alresford Fullback however had other ideas and managed to force Sam into dropping the ball Alresford's in goal area.
USP were then into defence mode, after giving away three penalties in a row and allowing Alresford 70 metres and from the resulting lineout the huge Alresford pack were able to drive their way over the line with a very strong maul.
From the restart USP gathered the ball back and started to put phase after phase together with Alresford on the back foot it allowed time and space for Jacob Mikurenda to score.
USP's hard working pack were to be the next ones on the score sheet with Phil Gilliland barging over from a few metres out.
USP decided to sort out their discipline and started to ensure they kept the ball in good fashion again, breaking the Alresford defence on a number of occasions with finally resulted in Sam Master getting a well worked try.
The second half was a different affair with Alresford had the wind behind them and started to use this to their advantage. They continued to pile the pressure on the USP line, with eventually resulted in the Alresford RFC pack driving over the line from a scrum on the 5 metre line.
USP were struggling to leave their half when trying to kick the ball clear into a strong breeze, so reverting to playing the ball out instead worked well with USP continually making yards and relieving the pressure far easier then when attempting with the boot.
Overall a strong attacking display for USP, they continue to improve week in week out. When they finally put an 80 minute performance together someone is in for a very tough day.
