U15s Strong Finish At Trojans 24 - 54
First match of the season
In the past few weeks we have had some invaluable start of season training sessions with 1st XV players kindly helping to coach the team, not least in line-outs which are an exciting new addition at U-15 level.
This Sunday, the Under 15s travelled to Trojans for a good-natured friendly that both sides used to give their squads some game time and help prepare for next week’s first league match.
With firm ground and good weather both sides ran the ball at every opportunity which made for exciting viewing.
Trojans blitzed U.S. Portsmouth with three quick tries in the first 10 minutes. U.S. were rocked back but solid tackling and forward play started to win possession and even up the contest. Incisive running from the U.S. backs gaining important yards up the field and then punching through to even the score. Sustained Trojan pressure led to a try in the corner and a slender 22-19 lead at half-time.
US Portsmouth seemed to be gaining in belief and strength as the game went on. The turning point came halfway through the second half with Trojans encamped on the US try line. The forwards put up a brick wall in defence and then won turnover ball that was run the length of the pitch for US to counter-attack and score against the overcommitted Trojans.
As both teams tired US Portsmouth pushed home this advantage with some quickfire tries to end with a scoreline that belied a very tight contest at least until the final quarter. Trojans sportingly had not rotated their much larger squad and so some very heavy legs on both sides welcomed the final whistle.
Next week we play Portsmouth Rugby Club in our first league match of the season.
