U15s Win League Match Against Portsmouth RFC 46-5
First league match of the season won with time to spare
Wintry grey sky, a biting wind and a 24 hour burst of heavy rain heralded that Autumn has now properly set in. Luckily United Services were playing at home on their 4G pitch so their first league fixture of the season against local rivals Portsmouth Rugby Club went ahead as planned.
United Services began brightly, pretty much where they had left off against the Trojans last week, and were soon running in tries. Good handling and adventurous running were much the order of the day with plenty of one-handed offloads, dummy runs and loops. This was backed up by fierce tackling, solid forward play and some decent kicking.
Portsmouth RFC U15s are a relatively new team and have improved dramatically in the past year or so. Their heads never went down and they competed throughout the match - ignoring the score and keeping on going which was great to see. Portsmouth RFC improved as the game went on, starting to make some decent runs and heavy tackles of their own. A consolation try scored against solid resistance just before half-time was a just reward. Going into half-time United Services led 34-5.
The match was played in good spirit and part way through the second half United Services reached the 35 point winning margin meaning that the contest was over according to league rules. The remainder of the match played as a friendly with some slight juggling of the sides to even things out a bit.
Next week we are training at Temeraire so if you would like to try playing rugby with U.S. Portsmouth then please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Our club is friendly, inclusive and open to all.
