US Portsmouth Under 15s Edge Thriller 44-33
US Portsmouth 44-33 Ellingham & Ringwood
A warm grey autumnal day gave perfect playing conditions for the U15s league match at home against Ellingham & Ringwood. Both teams looked lively in their warmup sessions and sure enough game lived up to expectations.
US Portsmouth scored first with the backs running great lines to punch through Ellingham & Ringwood’s defensive line. E&R fought straight back with 2 quick tries of their own – strong, fast and direct running showing what an open contest this was going to be.
Each side improved as the game went on, with better defence giving much less room to run in. The middle part of the game fluctuated from end to end as each side struggled for that elusive lead of more than one try. US forwards fought hard to drive over but were held up on the line or could not get the ball cleanly to ground at least twice in the second half.
With about five minutes to go US were leading 34-33 in what had become a very tight match. US piled on the pressure as they relentlessly worked through several phases to set themselves up deep in E&R territory. US gave themselves breathing space with a score near the posts with some powerful running that forced a crucial missed tackle. Almost on full time US finally put the match out of reach with a superbly worked poacher’s try round the blindside of the ruck to score in the corner (caught on camera above).
The game was played in great spirit with both sides determined to win. That said the ref commented afterwards how cleanly the match had been played with the only penalties given against either side being for a couple of off-sides.
Next week we are training at Temeraire from 11am so if you would like to try playing rugby with United Services Portsmouth then please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Our club is friendly, inclusive and open to all.
