Under 15s Edged Out By Eastleigh
US Portsmouth 12-24 Eastleigh
Perfect conditions away at sunny Eastleigh for this top of the table clash. Both teams warmed up well and looked purposeful as they ran through their exercises and drills. As it turned out this was a cracking match, played in superb spirit between two evenly matched teams.
Eastleigh hit the ground running with a solid early try - nothing that spectacular just space out wide and a couple of missed tackles. This woke up US who started to put together some decent passages of play. It took a long period of sustained pressure for US to finally cross the try line with a classic winger’s try in the corner.
Watching the match, you felt that US was starting to get on top - piling on the pressure through solid forward play and tackling throughout the team. Unfortunately it was one of those days when penalties and the occasional unforced error surrendered too much territory, with Eastleigh forcing a second try to go into the break deservedly 12-7 up. US also suffered a couple of injuries to pivotal players.
Both teams started second half in determined fashion and put together some good flowing rugby. The difference between the two sides was that Eastleigh took their chances to score and were comfortable at 19-7. US had some long periods of sustained pressure and good play but could not quite convert this into points. Eventually US did score after a tremendous effort in the second half - with forwards driving over to be held up twice. On the third scrum restart US spun it wide to score in the corner. Eastleigh broke through with one more try towards the end of the second half to finish 24-12.
Thanks to Eastleigh for their warm welcome and hospitality.
