Relentless U15s Beat Farnborough 83-7
US Portsmouth 83-7 Farnborough
After a slight hiccup in unlocking the gates at Clarence Field, both teams put in half an hour of warmup on a chilly grey day with the wind coming directly off the Solent.
By way of background US met Farnborough in the Hampshire Cup last season and with a full-time score 26-26 the match win went to Farnborough by the finest of margins, having scored the first try in the match. (Last season's cup performances put Farnborough into league 2 and US into league 3 for this season.) Also, Last week US had struggled for form on the first match back after Christmas and narrowly lost to Ellingham & Ringwood and so were determined to play far better this week. On top of that some key US players returning from injury meant we had almost a full squad for this eagerly anticipated match.
As soon as US ran onto the pitch it was clear that they were determined to take things up a notch. From the first whistle US showed how easy rugby can be when the basics are done well. With the ball in hand US kept their shape, supported tirelessly and had very few handling errors. Whenever they attacked or made a break yards gained were consolidated and the ball kept alive phases after phase. Farnborough battled gamely but hardly saw the ball as US scored 7 tries in the first half. Farnborough crossed for a consolation try but with US kicking all their conversions the league match was effectively over at half time (with a 35 point lead) the score 42-7.
The match was being played in good spirit and Farnborough stuck to the task in the second half (only 1 penalty was awarded in the whole match). Unfortunately for Farnborough, US just kept on playing as they had been. Ferocious line speed and running in defence saw promising moves from Farnborough snuffed out before they had a chance to get going. By the end US had added another 6 tries to their tally (making 13 tries in total).
Both sides' kickers had a good day - Farnborough converting their try and US converting almost all of theirs.
As usual the US team was rotated throughout the match so that all players got some decent game time and encouragingly the team kept its shape and performance levels consistent. This was, by far, US Portsmouth's best performance of the season yet.
Many thanks to Farnborough for making the trip south and and for a game that was played in great spirit.
Next week we are training at Temeraire. If you would like to try playing rugby with United Services Portsmouth then please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Our club is friendly, inclusive and open to all.
