DU Rugby Spends Time with Project UNIFY

Pioneers continue community outreach programs by taking rugby to Project UNIFY

Brent Lockhart, Michael Gestal, Jake Wilson, Chris Harris, Jack Owens, Ryan Wettersten and Landan Banks took time during finals week to partake in a Project UNIFY after-school activity, an instructional series that pairs special needs students with their typically developing peers at Mission Viejo Elementary School. This model developed by the Special Olympics seeks to increase “athletic and leadership opportunities for students with and without intellectual disabilities, while creating communities of acceptance for all."

The DU Rugby players set up some fun activities and drills that taught basic rugby fundamentals like passing, catching and ball-carrying. The program received very positive feedback and the Pioneers continue their goal of impacting the surrounding community through rugby.
