The #11 DU Rugby Club will face #5 New Mexico Highlands University this week in what should be a terrific game of rugby. Over the past few years, the two teams have developed a healthy respect for one another with close battles and a strong camaraderie off the field. Last year, DU Rugby secured both wins, once in the regular season with a score of 55-35 and then in the Cowboy Cup Championship with a 31-21 victory. The Pioneers will be hoping for a similar result on Saturday night.
DU Rugby will be missing a few key starters from its line-up with lock Josh Jolly, flanker Alexis Therianos, and #8 Chris Harris all out with short-term injuries. This however present opportunities for freshmen and returning players to fill their spots. Debuts will be handed this weekend to freshmen Jack Carmone and Cameron Ure, as well as sophomore Grant Whiteside earning his first competitive start in a Pioneers jersey.
With limited action this fall for both sides, it is hard to create a preview of the game. However, it will surely be a well contested game with some great rugby on display. We hope you can join us at Diane Wendt Sports Fields at 7pm on Saturday night for some great action.
