Although they didn't advance in the winner's bracket, it was a highly successful weekend for the UFRFC 7s team.
Aided by the size and strength of seniors Mike Breske and Brett Stubbs, the Gators put on a strong showing at the Collegiate Rugby Championship.
UF started the tournament with a solid 19-7 victory over Maryland and looked poised to make a deep run after a strong first half against Delaware.
However, the Gators couldn't hold the lead and suffered their first of two losses on the weekend.
Despite some strong defense, UF was unable to get on the board against back-to-back champion Dartmouth University.
Though they ended Saturday with a 1-2 record, UF showed resiliency by dominating Sunday.
The team got off to a thrilling start with a sudden death overtime victory against Temple University as Raf Freedman scored the game-winning try.
The Gators followed with a dominating performance against North Carolina State on NBC Sports. Thanks in part to the tough running of Breske and excellent ball control, the Gators cruised to a 31-5 win to advance to the Challenger Cup finals.
In a rematch against Maryland, the Gators didn't allow for any retribution as they defeated the Terapins 20-14 to end a terrific showing at the CRC's.
Congratulations to Brett Stubbs, Mike Breske, Raf Freedman, Will Greaves, Tommy Gibble, Rob Roux, Josh Nicdao, Jordan Manning, Ryan Gilbert, Matias Groetaers, Lucas Baistrocchi, Kahlil Harrison and coaches Ken Simmons and Gary Byrne for their hard work, dedication and performance in representing the UFRFC.
With the season over, Brett Stubbs now has time to let the wounds heal and get back to school.
