After the B-side captured third place last weekend in Naples, the A-side dominated at home, earning first place in the second round of FL 7's series.
The A-side had traveled to Athens last weekend to play the University of Georgia and Life University. On Saturday, they showed why they're considered one of the best teams in the state.
UF got off to a hot start, trouncing Florida Gulf Coast 43-0. Senior Mike Breske started the game by returning the opening kickoff for a try. The starting 7's prop managed to repeat the feat against USF in the Gators' convincing 34-12 victory.
In the next matchup, UF faced rival FSU in a redemption match from Naples. This time, UF's A-side won a close game against the Seminoles as sophomore Ryan Gilbert came up with the clinching try on a beautiful switch play with fellow sophomore Laurence Kidd.
In the semifinals, the Gators rolled over Emory-Riddle 25-10, setting up a final showdown with UCF.
The Knights' athleticism and solid rugby skills kept the Gators on their heels. With time nearly expired and down 10-7, flyhalf Lucas Baistrocchi attacked the weak side and offloaded to sophomore Geronimo Guzman for the winning score.
UF's B-side also put on a solid showing against some talented in-state competition, and the UFRFC's new players got a taste of action in a few 10's matches, including a tough test against the Gainesville Hogs.
The Gators will look to capture the Florida 7's Series this Sunday in Daytona. Congratulations to all players, coaches and fans of the Men's Rugby Team for their great showing this weekend!
