The University of Florida Men’s Rugby team opened up their 2013 fall season on Saturday with an intra-squad scrimmage at Hume Field. The scrimmage gave new players a chance to get a feel for a game many have never played before.
The practice match also allowed the veterans to knock the rust off before they take on the University of North Florida, Friday night. The match will be at University Village South field, next to the Southwest Recreation center, with the Gators’ B-side starting at 6:00pm and the A-side game to follow at 8 pm.
While the rest of the team was in Gainesville for the scrimmage, team captain Lucas Baistrocchi played on a larger scale this weekend. Baistrocchi competed with USA South in an exhibition match against Life University's Elite Training Squad. The game ended with Life University getting the win 85-0.
Baistrocchi said, “Life might have come out on top, but it was a good learning experience for a bunch of the South guys.”
He started the game at flyhalf and played 50 minutes until he had to come out due to a minor shoulder injury. He plans to play double duty during the fall, booting up for both UF 15’s and USA South, as he did last season. The shoulder injury should not hold him out of Friday’s match against UNF.
