Playing with several rookies in the starting lineup, UF fought down to the wire against a tough South Carolina squad, finishing the regular season with a 29-18 win to secure a spot in the SEC playoffs.
Missing starters Jordan Manning, Josh Nicdao, Matias Groetaers, Mike Breske and Rob Roux, the Gators relied on their depth and a hefty serving of Brett “Egg Salad” Gallrein in the regular season finale.
The man of the match used his superior size to score three tries against the Gamecocks.
Will Greaves and Danny Gibble also scored, and flyhalf Lucas Baistrocchi made two conversions.
Despite their record, South Carolina gave Florida a run for its money, scoring a pair of tries late in the second half to narrow the score.
However, the Gators tightened up on defense and maintained better ball security to close out the match.
The Killer Bs season ended with a close loss to South Carolina’s B-team. UF was also missing quite a few players from its starting lineup, as team captain Brett Stubbs was relegated to B-side duty.
Stubbs padded his stat sheet with a try, and freshman Laurence Kidd scored one of his own as Gibble converted both.
